I like the one of the mannequin and the escalator. Great example of leading lines.

I hate to say it, but sometimes I get an overdose of flower and bird photos here. Maybe I need to analyze it......maybe because the photographer lives out in the country and there is nothing else interesting enough to shoot? I know it's spring time and the flowers are in bloom and the birds are out in force. Maybe I'm spoiled because I live in Southern California and there always seems to be something to photograph? Today I took my cell phone out in the local mall and photographed random subjects that I thought were interesting. Now I'm wondering if my photos are boring to you?! To me, they were interesting enough to photograph. Am I being weird? Are they hopelessly boring to you as the flowers and birds are to me? I have a photographic motto: "No snapshots". Do you find any of these photos interesting?

Brent, I Love your previous pics. However, these mall pics may be used in the (near) future to explain the concept of a "Shopping Mall" to a younger generation, since very shortly they may no longer exist. Truthfully these pics have little interest to me since they remind me of pics I take when I go scouting for future pic-taking opportunities. I will take pics of interesting sites of interest that I may want to revisit at a different time of day, season, or with a model or other prop. I hope that this doesn't sound harsh since it is just an opinion and the pics you posted here, while interesting, aren't up to your previous levels of excellence. I do applaud your willingness to get out of your comfort zone to spur your creative bent.
Interesting, but no cigar,
JimmyT Sends

PS: Sometimes I perform the same experiments.

What is a "snapshot"? I do snap shoot often. In other words, I see something of interest that I have very little time to position/arrange before the image is gone. PP is nice, but it is still important to have the image in the first place.

I decided to address each shot separately. Granted just a few words. But not necessarily the only impression. Somewhat in title form.

1 The urban encroachment upon the forests. This can be worked further in PP to bring on the sense. The ragged leaves are the result of the failed defense, perhaps.

2 The new Formal. Four different concepts as to what is formal.

3 The portal to the attached Universes. This one could use the variance of height of the camera and focal lengths to be Sci-Fi imagery.

4 Two husbands in wait for their shopping wives. Self explanatory.

5 Many observations of beautification. There are several croppings that can be used to bring out a variant on the views.

6 The reserves arriving for shot #1.

7 Open dreams. A definite psychological study.

8 A guy's dream. Or a guy's window shopping.

I think the question should always be, "What do you see?" The replies are what should be interesting.

When you decided to do the shots, you just entered another phase of photography, the one that involves story telling.

Keep shooting.

I like these kinds of photographs--something different for a change for those who sometimes tire of birds and such. Thanks for posting, and nice work with the phone.

Cany, I'm not sure what you're trying to say, could you expand a little, please.

Where are the people? Nice documentary images. But I’m thinking that without people there wouldn’t be much opportunity for interesting photos in a shopping mall.

Brent I just have to tell you these are some of the most interesting photographs I think I have ever seen. Each one is a definite wall hanger to my thinking. These superb photos make every one of your other photographs pale in comparison. Nothing can ever equal these specific mall photos you have submitted.

Oh wait...I thought I was still looking at your OTHER photos and somehow got into these photos by mistake. Old minds sometimes do that, merge past and present into one confused photograph.

Stick to what you know. Please. Not that these photos are bad. They are just not up to your normal level of photography. Perhaps had you used a DSLR instead of your phone.

Dennis

I like your work you do, but the mall photos don't work for me. I can truthfully say this is the only thing you've done that I don't like much. I like work of cities and towns mainly because I may not get there and it these do grab my eye. So thanks for what you share with us.

Each to their own, or different strokes for different folks. I like your “beach” stuff. They remind me of my youth growing up in S. California. But, sure glad I left. California is not what it was 30 to 40 years ago and I can’t say I like what has developed. But again, different strokes for different folks. What your images do convey to me is a reflection of the state of California: a mall with no people in it; COVID lockdown. So typical of a over the top far left government that feels it needs to control every single action of its citizens. I could go on and on, but keeping it simple, the best thing I ever did was leave California.

Some photo subjects do get boring and repetitive, but then we have a few members that brighten our day - "old hippy" submits truly stand-out flower images, for example. Many of us are not doing a lot of travel (and a lot of travel images get boring quickly unless they capture a unique aspect of the destination or people, or have exceptional photographic properties - how many photos of the Eiffel Tower and Taj Mahal have we seen in our lifetimes?). So we photograph what we see on a daily basis - or on the weekends, when we get out to the woods and wetlands. You see surfers - and although that subject matter would be boring to me - a non-surfer- your skills are excellent and you show us photos of outstanding quality. I live near a wetlands ripe with wildlife that is used to people walking by. I have more close-up photographs of great blue herons and alligators than I can count, and generally do not even take photos of them now unless in a unique pose, an interesting activity (like an alligator eating a heron - THAT would get some views) or if there is outstanding lighting on them.

It would be nice to see more people photos - but these days you raise ire and suspicion by photographing strangers (especially children, which is illegal in some areas). Maybe as the pandemic wanes we will see more photos of people, including models, here.

Hi Brent, I have been preoccupied for the last couple of years with packing and moving into a new home after 35 years in one home (waay too much stuff and a husband that wants to keep everything) but hope to get back here more often. I still look everyday, making sure to see yours and a few others and I found this post and comments interesting and different for a change. Have to agree about the birds and flowers but as mentioned there are a few really excellent ones.
I think #3 could be a lot of fun for someone with creative pp skills, turning it into high contrast b/w with a walk toward the light at the end of the tunnel theme.
Keep up the good work! I’ll be back 😁
