Anyway. Back in the film days.
At Hershey Park with my Nikon FA camera with a Nikkor 180mm f/2.8 ED lens catching some nice candid shots,
until I noticed the rewind knob wasn't moving when I advanced the film.
Wasn't the only time either.

Then there were the days of film cameras. I'd take my beloved Kodachrome 36 shot reels. I knew I could get one or two shots beyond 36. Then I'd get to 40! Later I'd find that I'd pulled the film totally out of the cartridge and I'd have to find a way to stuff it back in. Lost a lot of shots that way!

I've done the "forgot to focus" one. I was doing a head shot for a friend. I shot a lot of poses and even had him wearing two different sport coats. Only about 1/5th of the shots were in focus, and those were mostly with him wearing a seersucker jacket, which produced lots of moire. Then he got smart and hired a real portrait photographer.
An earlier (and somewhat less embarrassing) incident occurred on a business trip to Germany back in film days. I borrowed my daughter's camera since I did not have anything lightweight. On Saturday evening, I attended a rather noisy outdoor festival. On Sunday I wanted to get a sunrise photo near my hotel. When I went to take the shot, nothing happened. The LCD display had a flashing 'E', which I took to stand for some obscure error.
Only later did I realize that the festival was so noisy that I did not hear the sound of the film rewinding at the end of the roll. The 'E', of course, stood for Empty. The film equivalent of not putting the memory card in?

Did that same thing yesterday. Couldn’t figure out why nothing was in focus. Then the light went on!! Need to press the back button. duh

Been there, done that. I feel for you, for me the worst part was explaining it to the family who thought you were a great photographer. 😖 😫 😩

I went to an important event last year and somehow had my camera was set to take RAW pictures. At the time I didn't know how to process RAW, so I couldn't use any of the pictures right away, and I was going to send them to an online magazine. I still don't know a lot about using RAW, as I mostly use JPEG.

Back in my film days I shot over 36 pictures and couldn't figure out why. No film in camera.

Long ago, when I was in college, I was on a European tour with a large group of people. It wasn't until about two weeks into the three-week tour that one of our group discovered his little half frame film camera had no film. So 72 priceless, once-in-a-lifetime photos did not exist. Lesson learned. Always double check that your film (or card, etc.) is loaded. And as you point out, that your camera is properly set.

In the late 80's I got an opportunity to go on a short cruise aboard the USS Constellation. The cruise went from the Philadelphia Naval Yard, south on the Delaware River for about 20 miles and back. I had my trusty Nikormat Ftn and snapped away as we sailed down the river. I took photos of the people who were also there from my college, photos of the ship and its many interesting sites, and a photo of the USS Shangri La which was parked south of the Naval Yard, awaiting its trip to the scrap yards in Texas.
But I forgot to put film in my camera. I came back with zero images. I think that trip qualifies as a "super DUH" experience.

I have lived long and learned hard, but sometimes I forget what I learned. One good thing though, now I can just blame EVERYTHING on old age!
