That is a good thing! I stayed out of the way of the Pros but got the whole Wedding & Reception. Because I knew a lot of the people I got additional shots that the Pros didn't even consider. I was also able to edit, retouch and get the photos to the kids in a week. The Pro set took a couple of months. It is a lot of work!

Usually the hired photogs do a lot of pre shooting also, eg. , bride/groom all dressed up=photos at the beach, rings, etc.

I am looking at renting a camera (Canon) body for a wedding my future niece wants me to shoot some pictures for her. The main reason for doing this is so I don't have to switch my lenses all the time. Looking for recommendations for the best sites to rent from. Thanks!

1. You should never photograph a wedding without having done it a couple of times. (you are asking for trouble)
2. If you rent a body, practice with it for a full week under various lighting conditions and similar to the lighting conditions you will be under at the wedding.
3. I did professional wedding photography for over 30 years, I never shot a wedding with any equipment I was not thoroughly familiar with and had tested on several weddings before using it as a front line camera.
Again, by renting an unfamiliar camera you are compounding an already troublesome assignment.

Borrow lenses, Lens Pro to go, and possibly your local camer store if you’re lucky enough to have one.

Several years ago I used LensRental.com to rent both a camera and a lens for about a week. (Reason was for a vacation, and I just wanted to see if I liked them enough to purchase.). A pro wedding photographer recommended them to me from her excellent experience in working with them. I could not have been more pleased with LensRental. The service was terrific. (I recall even when changing dates around — no problem. Everything arrived on time. Plus they pleasantly and efficiently answered any questions). The equipment was in excellent condition. One should pay close attention to the different levels of insurance they offer — at least at that time — just to understand it.
As indicated, my experience with LensRental was about 4-5 years ago. But, if I needed to rent a lens or camera today, they would be my first call.

I would recommend not taking pictures of shots the pro setup. Unless you have discussed it first with him/her.

If you rent a body you’ll get to lug two cameras, each with it lens. But you won’t hafta swap between lenses. If instead of a body you rent a wide-to-tele do-it-all zoom lens you’ll get to lug one body with its single lens. And you still won’t hafta swap lenses.

Keep in mind that no matter what you choose, the most treasured pix always come from guests using phones.

Good arguments for not hiring a photographer.

The OP should rent a body identical to his own body as he wants to not switching lenses.

If a pro was hired why she asked the OP to take more pictures?

Agreed. But ignoring the expense, the actual value of a “wedding pro” draped with heavy gear and maneuvering thru the roomful of guests is symbolic. His very presence and his activity rubber stamps *The Great Importance* of the gathering. He’s basically a living totem.

FWIW I got married at city hall outdoors on a nice day. Then we went out for ice cream. If it had rained we would’ve just picked another day.

I know! And before the photographer finished editing his pictures and deliver them the couple divorced and they only have the pictures. Most of them are made up....
