FYI. I have an SB-900 I no longer use as I only do Landscape photography. it is in good condition. I'll sell it for $125 + S&H (estimate $25). PM me if you are interested.

Be sure to check compatibility with your D5300 first.

It is compatible with almost ALL of the Nikon DSLR's, yours included. $125 is a "steal"; grab it before someone else gets it first.

Thanks for the great information.

I have tried everything everyone mentioned in the posts and decided the SB600 is not going to repaired. Like it was said, cost to repair doesn't warrant the expense. Will be looking into the clones.

I'm going to pass on the offer. Great price, but more flash than I need these days.

Hi Ed. Thanks for the detailed info.

As I said earlier cost to repair not justified in light of buying new unit. That may be the Godox tt685n.

My question, if you chose to answer, is that I'm also thinking of buying the remote (not sure which one) as a remote shutter release for my D5300. Do I need to buy the remote and receiver or just the remote will work?

It seems there are 2 alternatives. Some remote control accessories are 1-piece units that are comparable withte the built-in remote feature in your camera and the setting is made with the advanced control button as shown in the attached image. The Neewer mode as well as the Nikon OEM units are advertised as a single unit. There are other models from various manufacturers that show a 2- piece system with a remote control wireless unit and a receiver connected to the camera, I assume through the electronic cable release terminal.

The Neewer (brand) unit specifies a range of 16 feet. I also assume these are IR-based systems. There are many other choices that are compatible with your camera's internal system. A radio-based control system, however, likely has greater range and would be a 2-piece system. Radio controls can be used with any camera that has an electronic cable release socket because these do not depend on the internal IR receiver in the camera. With the 2-piecer units, you need to order the cord that is compatible with your camera.

It seems that are also more sophisticated remotes with built-in intervalometers.

Someof the two-piece unts mount on the hot shoe but are not wired in through the hot shoe- this would preclude attaching your Speedlight to the shoe, so you would have to rig up another bracket or device to mount the receiver when the Speedlight is in place.

Whatever system you decide on, make sure the IR units are compatible with your camera. I noticed that someof the manufacturers make different modes for various Nikon models, Canon models and others, If you order a 2-piece system, make sure to order the proper cord.

Update.

I bought the Godox TT685N after much research and responses from the UHH members.

It's seems like a good unit for the price ($110.00 USD) although a little larger and heavier than the SB600. I bought it from Hunts Photo & Video in their Manchester, NH store where I have bought most, if not all, my photo and printing gear.

The flash has lots of settings which are easy to get to, but for the immediate now, I'm leaving it on full auto until I get a chance to play with it. The reason for leaving on full auto is that I have my grand daughter's birthday today and don't have time to play games.

Someone said the user guide is a bit difficult to understand, but looking at some YouTube video's, there a lot to look at. Eventually it will be easier to figure out.

Again, thanks to all and will try to update this in the future.
