So (addressing more knowledgeable members) it would appear there is reasonable support and considerable enthusiasm early on. What is the best course of action from here? Let it run and see if more interest builds? Is there an interest break point? Easy enough to add a food photo a day for a while which will appear in Newest Pictures and keep the thread fresh. Any tweaks or corrections needed in the proposal? What, When, and How for next steps? Contact site management at this point? Solicit some volunteers as potential moderators? Any input will be appreciated!

Setting up a new section isn't that much effort. You just have to define the purpose and some FAQs. You can copy my Film Section set-up and just edit the wording to make it Food / Cooking. Send a request to ADMIN to have the section created and set yourself up as the local admin. Include some others as moderators if you want to share the effort, although one would think not too much nonsense will be attracted to such a section. Post an 'invite' in the Main Section when everything is ready.

You might encourage recipe attachments too, say as PDFs, although not image copies of copyrighted cookbooks.

Or, are you looking for someone else to do this work?

I frequently take pictures of not only the food my wife and I prepare, but also when we dine at neat or unique restaurants. I don’t post here but put a lot up on Facebook. I would be interested as a read and learn only. Good idea!

Thanks for your reply. I have no difficulty with doing the work, figured on that when I posted the idea. I looked at your intro to the Film Section and basically used it to write the proposal. Admin clearly knows about this, since they combined my two posts, but I have no idea how to contact them, or what criteria would be needed for a favorable decision. My personal view is that it is useful to have more than one Administrator / Moderator, since life imposes on photography. Beyond that, I have no idea of what tools, if any are available to an administrator.
In regard to recipes, here is what I included- "Original recipes can be added as a PDF or offered on request. No scans of copies from published materials. Nearly any recipe can be found on the internet and provided as a link."

I think it's a great idea and I would subscribe to it. I.m sure "AP" will approve as well.

I'm all for it. Would be willing to help as time allows. I think we could all benefit from this because with so many cook books on our shelves, we seem to have a hard time deciding what to cook. Also, so many of us have recipes we made ourselves and some handed down from grandma.

I would have forward via Private Message, but my UHH behavior seems to have offended you ...

Update the text of this PM content to be your new request for a Food, etc section and Private Message those updates to user name = ADMIN

Subject - Request for new section: Film Photography

Below is the all section list 'blurb' and the 'locked' top of section post. Please advise next steps and / or necessary updates if such a specialized section can be created. If / when acceptable, also please confirm the process to activate a new section.

Thank you, <your name>

[all section listing summary]

This section is dedicated to all types of film / analog photography, to share results and to discuss technique, film types, developing methods, and camera and developing equipment, and so much more, even best practices on scanning your old negatives.

[locked, top of section post]

As the section Moderator I'd like to welcome your creativity and input to create and maintain an active UHH subsection. Analog photography, also known as film photography, is a catch-all term for photography that uses chemical processes to capture an image, typically on paper, film or a hard plate. These analog processes were the only methods available to photographers for more than a century prior to the invention of digital photography, which uses electronic sensors to record images to digital media.

Interest in all types of film photography has been experiencing a very real revival. My own interests involve the film types, and the exposure technique, and the creation of a unique look based on color and B&W film that both overlaps and is distinct from a digital-only result. Others enjoy the developing and printing process and the vast range of film sizes, from ancient tintype and glass plate through general purpose 35mm negatives and slides and into the high resolution 'large format' using 4x5-inch sheet film.

Young (and old) photographers say film has more 'soul' than digital. This section isn't intended to rehash a debate over film vs digital; but rather, for an appreciation and discussion of the 'how' and 'where' and 'what' for those who never left film and for those interested in furthering this film comeback.

Personally, I only shoot film to be scanned and edited, and only 35mm negative film using auto-focus capable Canon equipment. I look forward to sharing my experiences, while recognizing mine is such a narrow view and level of experience within the long and historic spectrum of the processes and equipment that fall into the category of film photography.

I've scanned and edited hundreds of 35mm negatives. Let's include ideas on scanning too.

Please come and subscribe and share your knowledge and experiences and interest. I personally hope to inspire a new interest and confidence in shooting film, one that causes someone (hopefully you) to achieve a result they never thought possible in film, a result that is something you wanted and is more than just a lucky accident.

All of the general rules of the site apply to the Film Photography section.

would be fun to learn how experts take food photos. Learned long time ago that ice cream photos are usually mash potatoes because ice cream melts

Actually, ice cream is real. Truth in advertising laws makes it so.

Mashed potatoes are not widely used but solid shortening mixed with food coloring and confectioner's sugar is used as a non-melting stand-in model. That is more easily scoopable and realistic.

Scoops of the real stuff are carefully made and placed in the freezer or cooler filled with dry ice, then pulled out at the last minute for the real shoot.

Sincerely apologize if I gave the impression that I am anything but grateful for your advice and assistance in this matter. I did not realize till now that I had not quoted your reply, rude on my part. I have residues of behaviors from thirty five years in the corporate world that unfortunately still emerge on occasion. Much appreciate the direction and will proceed.

I expect to write the proposal today, review and submit in the morning. I do not know when or if it will be approved. I am optimistic. When approved there will be a post announcing it and providing details in Main Photography Discussions.

I think replies and picture posts to this thread will let the OP, Quixdraw see that this is a worthwhile endeavor. My wife is baking as I type so I will try to post a picture this afternoon. Although I might be asking for tips and help in food photography when I do. Looks like Quixdraw was posting while I was typing.

There are a number of folks who regularly or sporadically post Food / Cooking Photos. After I posted Crepes, another member called out the idea. It is certainly an area which offers commercial opportunity, with online recipe photos, restaurant photos, cooking equipment photos, etc. There are also many tricks of the trade which could be shared and learned. Unlike some of the other suggestions, this seems a useful, value added expansion which might be quite popular. Input requested, either way.
