Just a heads up here, due to corona, Canada is closed to American tourists again this summer. Also, many of the tours up here are closely tied to the cruise lines, especially Princess Cruise Line, and are either shut down or are operating on a limited basis. So keep that in mind when planning a trip up here. You can fly to Juneau and take the ferry to Haines and Skagway, but you won’t be able to go up into Canada on the train.
Here’s another thought for something to do “off the road.” Drive to Talkeetna and take a flightseeing tour of Denali. You can even land on Ruth Glacier where the mountain climbers rally before making the ascent to the top of Denali/Mt. McKinley. Something else you can do in Talkeetna is take a jetboat tour up the Susitna River with Mahay’s River tours.

For a unique drive consider the “Haul Road” north from Fairbanks to the Arctic Circle or farther. Follow it far enough and you cross the Brooks Range summit. Really wild country.

Actually, it was cheaper than the cruise up the inside passage that we took 2 years earlier.
