We drove down the Shafer Trail Road to the White Rim Road which I had been wanting to do for years, but weather or something or other always stopped me.
If you are intending to take the White Rim Road, you must get a free permit at the visitor's center and they will ask if you have a high clearance 4wd. If you are going to take the Potash Road to Moab the permit is not required and I don't think the high clearance is either.
My wife and I drove the Shafer Trail road first in '94 starting from Moab via the Potash Trail in a rented 4WD Ford Explorer to Island in the Sky and repeated in '98 with brother-in-law & wife. No car traffic but met a few bicycles! One of the best rides we've ever had in driving the (mostly) Southwest roads with them since '85. I later put those Canoyonland photos on video, dubbing the theme music of Jurassic Park.
I'd love to do that road!
The one must see in Canyonlands.

Great set, the Shafer Trail was originally used to drive cattle from the lower to upper pastures. My wife hates the road because of the drop offs.

Very good series, Alan.
Thank you, Earnest Botello.
Great photos bring back fond memories, thanks for posting. 2 years ago we did that drive and continued on to Moab. A few rough places in the 2nd 1/3 of the trip, 4WD kicked in on our Forester, but could have made it without 4WD. Left Canyonlands at 1:30-2pm and got to Moab about 6:30pm. Takes longer than you would think. One of the Best drives I have ever done.
