Pet Peeve-Terminology of "Entry Level"

Having used a number of cameras over the years, Brownie, Yashica SLR, Canon AE-1, Casio Z85 etc...I decided to treat myself to another camera. I read reviews, talked to friends, kicked a few tires and finally last December bought the Canon T2i. It is a great camera. It has a lot of bells and whistles and will last me a long time as long as I don't fall victim to the advertising barrages for the latest new model cameras. The DSLR's being manufactured now are so powerful that to use the terminalogy of "entry level" is annoying. It may be just me! There, I've vented and now I feel better. Have a great day you'all.

A Boeing 707 jet is a fine airliner, but compared to a Boeing 767, it is "entry level". I believe that you have made a good choice. Too many photographers overbuy there first DSLR.

Everything I have is entry level but I get some awesome shots.
There I said it.
Back in 2000 it didn't exist, so all you have to do is turn back the clock and now you have something right out of the future.

Mine is also 'entry level' A Nikon D3100, but I'm happy with it, it has all the bells and whistles I need for the moment. When buying it I did not see the need to 'overbuy' as Nikonian said up above. I will upgrade eventually, money being the biggest issue ATM <rolleyes> but I'm in no great rush.

It's just a way to tell the pricing levels apart. What exactly would you prefer them be called? Entry Level seems pretty self explanatory. If you don't like having an entry level camera you are welcome to give it to me and buy something more expensive :-)

How about calling it a gateway product?

I have the same camera, and its abilities will enough for me for a long time (and I do use it properly, not as a big point-and-shoot).

My pet peeve is 'for the over 55s'. I am well over 55, but refuse point blank to look at a book so titled. When they also attach it to the 'for dummies' label, I become incandescent. It seems to me that a technical book of, say, 500 pages reduces to 300 when 'for dummies' and to 150 when 'for the over 55s'.

There could be a forum dedicated to terms - and other things - that annoy us. Like you, I dislike "entry level." I also dislike "to the next level," "liquid water," and "not even light" - as in something escaping from a black hole. I could go on - and on - but I won't.

I just call them "base" models. As in the case of autos, as the trim list goes up (again in auto technology), you have mid level & then the top end then becomes the "luxury" version. ( can you tell I worked in the auto industry before retiring)

That's what I need - a Luxury Camera.

Screw the arbitrary designators of cameras from entry level to professional.

Sure, the more money you spend the more bells and whistles you get.

But it's the photograph you create that's the most important part of photography.

There are many interesting stories about professionals and their equipment. Here's mine:

A photographer goes into the executive office suite of a large corporation to do a portrait of the CEO. When the CEO sees the photographer he exclaims, "Why are we hiring you? My son had the same equipment as you do!"

The photographer calmly replies,"Just outside your office I saw your secretary using an Olivetti typewriter. Did you know that Hemingway also used an Olivetti?"

Totally agree. I just picked up a T3 recently and am still struggling to learn it adequately. I read THIS model is truly entry level but its got more B&W than I'll ever use. There, I vented too.......

I have a Canon T1i, a step down. I wish I could consistently get shots as good as the camera is capable of. This 'entry level' model is amazing. I do not need more bells and whistles, a bigger sensor, etc. I just need more skill! Upgrading a DSLR from this level to me is a waste of money. A better lens may help in certain situations, but the camera body itself, to my thinking is awesome. I guess what that really means is that I am an 'Entry Level' photographer!

Excellent idea! Start a pet peeve section. Then we can put all our complaints in a dedicated section. DO IT,

I have the xsi for 2 yrs. and I have not learned yet near all that it is capable of. One thing I did learn from this site is your money is better invested in good glass than the body. I have three good lens and I they have improved my pictures more than I expected.
