4 years in the Navy and I was in tattoo shops all over the world and never found anything I wanted to wear the rest of my life. Like most of you are saying, what about 30 or 40 years from now.

Thanks for the feedback. I think her beauty shines through regardless. I'm not so fond of her tattoos either actually. However, they are in honor of her late brother & father. So, I guess to her they mean a lot. However, I feel that they will restrict her for the rest of her life from certain opportunities for sure!

Sad. Why would anyone want to "honor" her late brother like this? No, tattoos are not sexy. Just my opinion.

The only thing worse is those stupid studs in Eyes, Noses. Lips and also the Tongue.

I once asked my daughter what guys were thinking when they saw a girl with tats or studs.

She has no tats and no studs. Not likely to get one either.

Sorry for offending some of you but that is the way I feel.

I like the 2nd pic. In the first shot, she looks a bit harsh. I would not say I find tats to be attrative, but they are acceptable, imho.

As for tattoos, one of my grown daughters has 2 half sleeves. I think she is beautiful. And this summer, she talked me into a small tattoo of a rose.

I found a pic which shows those 2 tattoos. I did NOT take the pic and do not know who did, so don't blame me for the quality of the photo. LOL

I meant to add that my daughter is a professional. When working, she wears clothing which covers her tattoos.

She once told me that people frequently tell her the tats will be ugly when she is 70. She said she highly doubts any of them are going to be models at 70, either. I think she has a very valid point. Of all the reasons to not get a tattoo, that must be the most ridiculous one. I know I thought the same thing, but after she said that, I realized I will be no bathing beauty in my old age, either.

I guess for me it's a little confusing... the whole reason to get a tat in the first place is to express yourself in a unique way. It becomes who you are, and I'm sure there is a lot of pride associated with it. The part that confuses me is why would anyone want to cover them up, or put them in places only their sexual partner or doctor would see them?

Moreover, there isn't one person I've met (my age is speaking now...) who several years later DOESN'T regret getting one. At the very least, they say they wouldn't do it again given another chance. I don't think it has anything to do with modeling or not modeling at age 70. It has to do with wisdom, maturity and self-respect.

Tagging your body with things doesn't change who you are, it just makes it look like you don't know who you are. Honoring a friend or loved one, place or event in your life can be done way more effectively through other means---that's why we have statues, quilts, plaques, monuments, heirlooms, decals, posters, organized events like race for a cure, AIDS walks, speeches, donations, prayer, etc. Getting a tat is rather selfish if you think about it.

Regardless, if you have a tat, then be strong enough in your conviction to share it with others and never try to hide it, regardless what social, business, or other social circle you find yourself in. Because isn't this really the point? To be proud of who you are? Displaying your tat to other tat owners or those who think your tat is cool and honorable is easy. Since you've taken the first step to define yourself, take the next step and proudly display it to ALL walks of life.

You know that you want to be asked about it, or that you want people to comment about it, or that you want some kind of attention for it---directly or indirectly. Be proud and self-confident. Perhaps tats are sexy to some when having sex, but it doesn't add or subtract from the beauty you found within that person before having sex. A tat is not going to endure in a relationship because your heart already sees through it. Tats eventually become invisible to those who see them all the time. It's like visiting a friend who has had the same landscape picture on the wall for dozens of years---the first and maybe the second time your guests see it, they will marvel and comment, but by the third visit it becomes part of the furniture. Therefore, I think there is a good business opportunity to sell temporary tats that last longer than a few hours or days. This way you can change it and enjoy more attention.

Just my opinion folks. Hold your flame. I would never advise someone to get a tat, but we are all individuals and I believe in the freedom of choice. -Peace

I don't get this... why have a tattoo if you aren't going to show it? Isn't it some sort of expression or symbol of your life that you are proud of? Okay, I understand how you would want to cover something you are ashamed of, but not something you are proud of... please fill me in.

Why. It's all been written right here.
Stupid, sad, freak show, Stupidity, idiot.
Oh and my favorite, "tattoos=gang member=hard core=dead or prison."

I have no idea why you think a person should proudly show the tattoo at all times. In my line of work as a medical professional, I typically wear a white jacket. Am I proud of my chosen profession? Sure. I do not, however, wear the white jacket to church, the grocery store, or my class reunion. That does not mean I am ashamed or less than proud of my walk in life. To me, it indicates there is a time and place for the jacket. A tattoo can also have a time and place.

My daughter covers her tats while working for the same reason she has to wear solid-colored clothing while working. Her clients are visual learners. In her profession, it is unacceptable to wear distracting clothing, colors, or even flashy jewelry. Her clients must be able to concentrate on her - not her accessories.

As to why people get tats in places that most others won't see, I have no clue. There are probably as many reasons as there are people with hidden tats. Mine is on the front of my shoulder. When wearing a tank top, it may be visible. My reason is that I got the tattoo for me. I didn't get it to show it off. And I don't consider it sexy.

I suspect every woman on this site has at least one piece of special jewelry. She thinks it is beautiful. It may hold sentimental meaning for her. If it is a wedding ring, she may wear it every day for the rest of her life. If it is some other piece of jewelry, she probably pulls it out for special occasions. She takes pride in wearing it and enjoys owning it.

And most of the men here probably own a nice suit which is worn for weddings or funerals or maybe to the office. You probably own at least one. Maybe you know you look sharp in that suit and walk just a bit taller when wearing it. I bet you don't wear it to the baseball game, though. It really isn't necessary in all walks of life, is it?

What I'm saying is that fancy clothing, jewelry, and tats do not define a person's sense of self-worth. Nor should they. They are fashion statements to some and sentimental to others. Sometimes they bring back wonderful memories of a deceased loved one or a loving spouse.

Obviously, tats are not for everyone, but if you don't close your mind to a well-dressed, well-spoken, well-educated, lovely person who happens to have a tattoo, or two, you may find your life is better for having met him/her.

Peace to you,
Lou Ellen

Lou Ellen,

Thank you for your reply. It's never been explained to me this way. Makes a lot of sense. I guess my opinion of tats has been formed by relatives and friends who regret having them now (in older age). Obiviously, this a very small sample size and not representative. Thank you for taking the time to reply. I do appreciate it. I'm still not ready to encourage my kids to get a tat, but if they come home with one someday, maybe I'll be a little more tolerant---I said maybe. :-) -Peace

I just turned 29 yrs old. Since I was a teen, I always wanted a tattoo! However, I am very picky! I never found something that I wanted to have on my body for the rest of my life. I have never been needle shy......actually as a small child when at the Dr's office I would ask if I needed any shots! Weird I know. Earlier this year I found something I think is creative & unique enough to suit me & worth having on me for the rest of my life. So, I got my first tattoo!
People get tattoos for various reasons. I'ts definitely an adrenaline rush! Most people feel a sense of pride....
For me, its a constant reminder that I am not alone... when I am having a rough day I actually look down at my feet and am instantly encouraged!
It says "Yea as I walk in the valley of death, I fear no evil you are with me..."
