Open the recycling folder, find your file there using one or the other list sorting:
- Filename
- Date deleted
If the file is not there, it may have been purged from the recycling bin or the software that deleted it has by-passed the 'safe delete'.
Only specialized software can help you with that.
I would recommand
Recuva. It is a free easy to use software that can find almost anything and will indicate if the file is still usable.
There used to be an app named Can Opener that would work. When you trash something it is only the Directory that gets scratched. After that the Mac might start overwriting the file space, so time since counts for a lot.

Since you are a Mac user (I am not) can you do research to find software that will retrieve data even after what the Mac equivalent of recycling bin... Something that works, and you can test...
