lol, that is why we are going.
Bring strong insect repellent...mosquitos and flies brutal in some areas. Otherwise, beautiful photo ops.

I have been there before. I am aware of the strong insect repellent. I even bought great itch relief from a pharmacy there that makes it. I has been several years since I was there.
I am hoping for locations on Chincoteague. Wildlife areas, and other photo ops.
Thanks

In addition to tiny horses, look for migrating shore birds. Otherwise it is a big flat area with little else going.
My parents went there fairly often into their early eighties, so apparently not particularly challenging physically.

I seem to remember places in town where various artists offer prints and water colors of the area. I have one somewhere.
ronichas was able to watch a total solar eclipse which occurred on March 7, 1970, whose cone was visible on Assateague Island... Occurring only 1.3 days after perigee (Perigee on March 6, 1970 at 09:32 UTC), when the Moon's apparent diameter was extremely larger. This was an ethereal expirence I'll never forget... Shared the moment with the young lady who was to become my son's mother... Total Darkness descended like a Stage Curtain... only a ring of fire where the sun had been...
So yes Assateague is a magical place for sure... totally unlike the vulgar commercial spectacle of Ocean City just miles to the north... Oh, and the ponies where there in large numbers then...
As for insects? Depends on whether or not you have off shore breezes.... then life is good... calm or on shore light breezes from the mosquito overrun bay area is a serious hazard... Not many camping without mosquito netting on their tents...
bring a macro lens... amazing array of treasures along the high tide line...
Enjoy! So jealous... lol

Assateague is smaller. There are some nice photo ops with the horses on the beach when you are lucky. Ferry Island has some nice sunsets, especially after a storm. There are a few places along the road where you can view and shoot shore birds.
Chincoteague is much bigger, more opps from the car and within reach of some light hiking along the many trails. More wildlife and lower human density compared to Assateague.
Horses are wild, though they don't mind people. However, get too close and you'll get a taste of their hooves. It never fails that some stupid tourist tries to feed one or shush it away because they are invading a campsite - and they inevitably get kicked.
Be prepared for wind! It's mostly flat with little to block the wind. It can be 10° - 15° cooler than before you cross the intercoastal to the barrier islands.
If you like fried seafood (soft-shelled crabs) - the place to go to is Metompkin's Seafood, about 5 mi south of the turnoff for Chincoteague on Rt 13.
Assateague is in my back yard - 35 min by car, and 120 min by bicycle. I go there often.

100% Deet is the only thing that works against those bloodsuckers. But next week is still pretty safe.

You might check out the launch schedule for NASA's Wallops Flight Center - you might get lucky and be able to observe/photograph one.
Be prepared for an entrance fee onto Chincoteague; this is collected by USFW, though may be too early in the season. A NPS pass should get you in for free.

Don't forget the lighthouse at Chincoteague (if you're into that sort of thing).
There's a public landing to the east of Spence in Maryland that could offer sunrise shots without the sand of the beach getting in your equipment! (The barrier island is about 5 miles out here.)
The "back" way from Chincoteague to Ocean City/Assateague via VA679 to MD12, then cutting from Girdletree to Spence is a way to keep off MD13/113 and enjoy the local sights.

Costs to get onto Assateague though, not Chincoteague.
And to OP, a walk through the Chincoteague will reveal lots of photo ops too. Neat small town. There's a nice and very interesting Chincoteague Museum too, on your left and just before the bridge to cross over to Assateague.
