I'm thinking about getting a new router. I'm using a Linksys WRE54g Router(WRT54GS?) that I bought in 2005. Occasionally, the living room TV pauses and says the network speed isn't fast enough. I'll have to check and see if it's wired directly from the other room. There must have been some improvements made since 2005. I'm will to hear your opinions on the current crop or routers.
The English language needs lots more words. If you google "best router," you get both the woodworking tool and the electronic item. So many have totally different meanings.

Almost anything new will help a LOT, provided your Internet service is fast enough. We’re using a Netgear R7000-based AC 1750, I think. We have 11 devices on three stories. No issues, even in my work shed on the back corner of the lot. We have no repeaters and no wired connections.

Plumbers habitually mispronounce it. They call it a "Rooter"

You might check if it is your Modem and not the router that is slowing you down

A good reason to do some benchmarking/diagnostics before deciding on a cause and cure. My comment is that in general, when troubleshooting an issue (whether it’s electronics, cameras, cars, etc) the tendency is to arrive at a solution without asking enough questions and making enough observations and tests to completely understand the problem.

To add to the confusion, in the UK at least, the pronunciation differs.
The woodworking tool is pronounced "rowter", whereas the electronic device is a "rooter".
That router is/was a work horse had one myself. After a a mess of a time using the Netgear Orbi mesh and trying to get my older Ring devices to sink (not) I ended up abandoning it and after much searching ended up choosing an Asus RT-AC3100. It's worked well for me the past 10 months.
Happy shooting and computing
What's discouraging is that a search for the "best" routers turns up prices in the $300 - $400 range.

To find out, connect your computer with an ethernet cable from router instead of wifi. If the wired connection is spotty/slow then the problem is with provider/wiring to house.
