I have a 24-120 f4 and love it. It is my main lens for general and event photography

I once owned the original version, which I considered to be ok for somethings. I switched to a Sigma 24-105 ART which I find much better. I have never used an extension tube on either as I have a couple of micro lenses. Best of luck.

I purchased the 24-120 f3.5-5.6 D last fall on EBay for a song. Really like it a lot. I also use it on my D90. Stopped down and it produces very nice images even tho it’s not popular with the Critics Section.

Just curious how you managed to load the Velvia into the D90? I couldn’t figure out how to open the back.
Thought about that, but would make closing it back up a bitch
I do not have the Nikon 24 to 120 lens. However, my favorite landscape photographer, Adam Gibbs, reports that this Nikon 24 to 120 is his most used lens.
I no longer use the original version, the D lens that I used a lot for landscapes and some portraits. I did use it often to shoot weddings. I had no complaints and it always yielded excellent quality images.
I have no experience with the f4 version.

The f4 version is the newest and supposedly the best but I am quite happy with my D version.
I was using the 24-120mm on my D850. It’s a versatile lens, but replaced it with the non-VR version of the Nikon 20-70mm. The 24-70 doesn’t have the reach of the 24-120, but the image quality of the 24-70 is superior in my opinion. That being said, if I could only have one walk around lens, the 24-120 is a good option.
I bought the 24-120mm f/4 refurbished by Nikon on B&H. I have a 105mm f/2.8 micro Nikkor, so I've never tried extension tubes, and I'd be a little dubious about tubes on a zoom, but I was happily surprised at how closely the lens focuses at 120mm. No data on portraits either. All the tests say it's not a tippity-top performer, but I've been quite happy with the results.
From the view point as a part time professional photographer:
1) Owned this lens for about 7 years. No problems.
2) Traveled the world with it (14 countries) for months at a time, using it as my primary lens - D610, d800e
4) 1000s of terrific shots BUT definitely some soft spots ( wide open @ 120 is not that great but usable)
6) overall IQ is excellent
7) As a portrait lens, compared to my 100 2.8 Tokina, not preferred at all. BUT I have used it at events (when $$$ at stake) AND results were fine
7) solid weather sealing, not too heavy, well made
8) great value as a used lens at current price points
9) if this lens failed, would buy another
I have the 24-120mm f4 lens on my D750 95% of the time.It is a very sharp,great landscape lens.
The best thing about this lens is the focal length range. I got this as the kit lens on my D780. Am growing disappointed in the results; it is simply not a particularly soft lens at least with my camera and even after auto AF tuning. And I am missing the extra stop of a 2.8 lens. I have a new 1.4G 50 and a circa 1979 105 2.5 AI lens and they produce noticeably sharper results. Looking to get a 24-70 2.8 as a replacement. Just my 2-cents.
