You are the proud owner of a Saunders 4x5 COLOR PROOFING Easel- problem is, there are parts missing. The insert you have is for making one 4x5 print with very wide borders. The missing inserts allow you to print 4- up proofs on one sheet of paper. The opening would be in on the corner of the black insert so you can rotate it to make 4 separate exposures. It's kind of a stripped-down version of the more costly multi-print model with more convenient kinda trap doors for focusing and composing.

Here's a link to another used one that is offered up fr sale. It seems that inserts as missing as well but you can see the lines marked off on the bottom plate that indicates the position of the 4 borderless prints.

Thanks. I looked at the ebay one and that's the same one I have. The missing inserts would explain how else the easel could be used. I am not doing darkroom work any longer, but it would have been interesting to make a 4x5 print on 12x15 paper to see how it looked.

Mr. E.L.. Shapiro has gotten you close.

14 X 17 refers to a 1/4 plate size, in the print industry it is loosely called ''a tear sheet''. Models and photographers use to carry ''their book'' as proof of work. When published in a high end glossy magazine they would remove the page from the magazine and that page was 14 X 17 inches in size, if the print were a full page spread then two pages would face each other in the publication and the two pages were removed ('torn from the magazine, actually, cut from it) and presented as the facing pages in the portfolio that was called one's 'book' giving proof that the image had indeed been published.

In the world of printing the original sizes were standardized, and the 14 X 17 is referred to as a quarter plate; plate refers to the metal plate that was used to print page sizes, because the sheet size was twice as large in both dimensions or 28 X 34 for a full plate size.

So, in photography, the print size that Saunders easels are sold as a 14 X 17 easel in which there was a four blade insert. When removed the easel became a 14 X 17 speed easel that would deliver a 1/4 inch border around the edge (if you wanted a 'bondless print' you simply inserted the paper and did not lower the frame to created the 1/4 inch border. The Saunders four blade easel was a 14 X 17 inch speed easel that had recessed guides to allow the centering of 11 X 14, 8 X 10, and 5X 7 inch paper. To made 4 X 5 prints, one inserted a piece of metal (supplied at purchase) into the 5 X 7 slot so that the centering would align with the markings on the easel blades to set any masking needed for that print size.

Saunders was considered the Cadillac of easels in the photographic industry. One last point, easels have a thickness that is a standard, it is 1/4 inch and one inch thick. How long has that been a standard? E. Leitz made a 35mm enlarger that was a true auto focus enlarger Model 1a true 1c and later a 35mm and 2 1/4 enlarger marked IIa and IIb. My Model 1c enlarger from the 1920's has two settings on the auto focus ring with matching holes in the steel up right, one for 1/4 inch the other for one inch elevated easels.

Had a memory Flash-Back today. The sheet of paper is placed on the base plate into each corner position, in turn. Once set-up, four small prints can be made without moving the base plate. Just lift the black top plate with cut-out. The 'odd size' base plate allows the paper to be moved into each corner, for four prints to be made on one sheet of paper. Quite simple to use.

I missed seeing anything that would center an 11x14 sheet in it.

A sheet of 10 x 8 paper is placed into the corners (four times) and the exposures made (four times ) you will end-up with four 5" x 4" prints.

Thanks, but it does measure 12 x 15. It is by Saunders. I tried to find them on the internet, but couldn't. I guess they are no longer in business.
