Taken with a 28 mm, and cropped severely. I think it is a young peregrine.

A 28mm? Wonderful that he allowed you this close for your picture. Good work.

Where was this shot taken? Kind of hard to tell from this image but the head markings don't look right for a Peregrine Falcon. They have a distinctive hood & eye rings that I don't see here. Possibly a female Merlin but ???

Shape and proportions of head and beak (from this perspective), color of iris, and the breast plumage pattern are most suggestive of a last-year juvenile red-tailed hawk, possibly beginning molt into adult plumage - a bit iffy on that last point - could be a second year bird but would need to see the tail to be sure.

E.bird.org has a bird identification system and a plethora of other bird related stuff. Cornell University sponsors it and it is free. You can sign up or just browse. I started using it last week. Stumbled upon it.

Taken in NYC. He was on the top of the lamp post. Believe me when I say that I was far enough away for him not to care about me at all.

By the way; there’s not a snowball’s chance in Nassau that it’s a peregrine falcon.
Its genus is Buteo (species jamaicensis).

NYC is home to one of the LARGEST populations of Peregrines in the country.

I agree with others suggesting an RTH. Hard to tell with 100% certainty from this picture though.
