To be looking south and having a reasonable chance of a dark sky, you might want to consider the north shore of Lake Michigan in the Upper Peninsular. There are some light houses there, but you'll have to research if they are suitable for what you want.
Hi dilla.b - I'm originally from Michigan but never had an interest in them until I'd moved to Florida & had seen the majority of the state's lighthouses. My roommate & I really got into them & made several trips to Michigan to visit my family & then visit as many lighthouses as we could. I would suggest googling the Michigan Lighthouse Association. They are a very active group & could be a big help. I will warn you that you'll have a very difficult time picking a favorite. Good Luck. I just thought I should give you an idea of what we had to deal with in our lighthouse hunts. The books we used had directions but by now they probably have the GPS address for each of them. I can't wait to see your photos & if you were able to pick a favorite !!
You will have a tough time dealing with light pollution anywhere along the shores of the mitten. If you have the time I highly recommend going to the UP If you can, there is a lighthouse in Big Bay where the keepers' house has been converted to a B&B.
I thank all of you so much for your valuable input! I have shot 10 or 12 lighthouses in MICH during the day but I do have the time this year to check out the night locations. I do use Photo Pills in my sight selection but I do love the personal input from the folks on this site! Light pollution sure can be a big problem so I want the most dark locations I can find. The references you have given me are indeed appreciated. Thanks again...Bob
Jim.. I am looking for the darkest sky I can find for the Milky Way with a lighthouse in the foreground. I need to be on the north side looking south. I plan on doing my scouting during the day and book marking the ones that will work. In the past I shot quite a few on the east shore of lake Michigan during the day but want to get a few on the Huron side further north for night shots rising behind the lights.
Thanks John.. This is one I have in mind but it may be a little tough for me to get to. I can't do much climbing over rocks etc!! Hate getting old!
Thank you very much! I will research those.
Thanks Strix...I will research those ones..
Thank you! I will check this one out.
Thank you very much for your input..
Check out the north pier of Grand Haven's Light House. Lake Michigan looking SSW should be very dark for a sky background. The Light house is on the south pier but you should have some good luck getting what you want.
Thank you.. I will check it out.
Fred... Which light? I see three list for Grand Haven.
