After reading the responses, I would like to make a suggestion. Instead of worrying about keeping your cards straight, and buying multiple cards, why not purchase a device that will allow you to write all of your files to a second medium - like a large thumb drive. You can get a 512 GB USB 3.0 stick for $65.

And a mini router with an SD reader - a RavPower File Hub

https://www.amazon.com/RAVPower-FileHub-Wireless-Portable-Transfer/dp/B07P5QDQ1B/ref=sr_1_1_sspa?dchild=1&keywords=ravpower+router&qid=1616409440&s=electronics&sr=1-1-spons&psc=1&smid=AY78UD59U41CU&spLa=ZW5jcnlwdGVkUXVhbGlmaWVyPUEzSzZPSEIwTUk3VFYwJmVuY3J5cHRlZElkPUEwNTcxNjk2VE5UUFcwUzdCSjdUJmVuY3J5cHRlZEFkSWQ9QTA2OTg0ODUxVzQzMEVKT08xNURNJndpZGdldE5hbWU9c3BfYXRmJmFjdGlvbj1jbGlja1JlZGlyZWN0JmRvTm90TG9nQ2xpY2s9dHJ1ZQ==

This way you can store your files in folders named the way you like - all in one (preferably two, with a second thumb drive). I use an earlier version of this when traveling - very easy to use, and you can manage the file transfer with any wireless device. In short, it sets up a local wifi network, and uses a phone, tablet or computer to initiate (or you can do it with a single button press on the router) and monitor the file transfer. Another bonus is that it has a 6700mAh battery which can charge a phone several times. This also can plug in to a wired network (often found in hotels), and let you use up to 5 devices on its private network.

You go out and shooot - when you come back you load the day's images into their own folder on the thumb drive. Then back them up to a second thumb drive. It's fast and easy.

Gene51,

The RAVPower FileHub sounds like a good idea. I like the fact that it is portable, light weight, and does not require a PC or smart phone to copy SD cards to a USB "disk". The model you suggested is hard/impossible to get currently. Do you know of similar items?

Thanks.

I would like advice about putting permanent labels on SanDisk Extreme Pro SDXC memory cards.

1) What ink/pen should I use? Is a Sharpie Permanent Marker with an ultra fine point the best? I am concerned about the writing rubbing or washing off. I assume that there are no "safe" stick-on labels.

2) What naming scheme do you suggest? I need to handle a two week safari (non-photographic). Each image will occupy about 25MB. I expect a lot of images, but do not have a good handle on the number. I don't expect t use the memory cards for permanent storage.

Thanks

I don't number my cards for two reasons: I don't want to put a label on the card that might come off in the camera, and I want the flexibility to reorder them if I add or delete one or more cards. I used to use the small plastic cases and number them by writing the number on the adhesive side of a Post-it note and putting that on the inside of the case; works great. However I now use a waterproof card wallet that holds 12 cards, which is enough for anything so far. When I get ready to go on a trip, I format all of the cards and put them in the case in the order that makes sense. I currently shoot mostly with a 24MP Canon 80D that gives me around 900 RAW images on a 32GB card, of which I have 9, plus 3 64GB cards. I put the card in the first position in the case into the camera and when it's time to use another card, I put it back in its place and take the second card out and use it, thus leaving the second position in the case open until it's time for the next card. This way, I don't need to number the cards. I also have a compact Canon G5X Mk II (20MB) and the files are small enough that I keep 2 cards in their numbered plastic cases in the camera case. I also have a 2 TB external drive that I can back up to if necessary, but have not had to delete any files on the cards yet to reuse them. We're going on a month-long trip to Europe next year that includes an ocean and river cruise and pre- and post-cruise extensions. I plan to upgrade to a 32MP 90D before the trip, so I may have to buy another card wallet and some more cards. A small price compared to the trip cost.
