Composite (PS CC)
This as simple as adding an image to an existing image. You probably have done that already when creating collages or even virtual frames.
You have been using layers for a long time, most of the time adjustment layers. The difference is only in the content of the layer. You just need a bitmap, a vector graphic, a linked document as an additional layer.
You must be able to make and use selections and masks. They are related but different, think about 'good and evil twins'.
In its simplest form, something that is used more and more to add 'drama' to an otherwise blah image: sky replacement. If you know how to do that, you can go into other more adventurous compositing. Add birds by example. No need top be picky at first, just do it for fun using masking.
In a more advanced model you need to pay attention to scale, color blending, light and shade direction (and presence) as well as quality...

I’d suggest a note about feathering of a few pixels as an option to lessen the harshness of the edges.

You are right if this was about creating a selection or mask.
In this case I assume one knows how to do this already. Good call thought.
