According to The Family Handyman -
Kleenex Tissues were invented for gas masks. During World War I, there was a cotton shortage and the thin tissue was created to place inside gas mask as a filter.

Toilet paper isn't that much different from facial tissue (Kleenex is a brand name) so I looked it up. Although paper (and other interesting and unusual things) were used in antiquity, toilet paper as we know it appears to have started in the mid 1800s in New York with the introduction of "Medicated Paper for the Water Closet" (

Interesting. I'd read other historical reports on the development and use of toilet paper. I always found it rather funny that as soon as a civilization invented paper, which is a very complex process initially making paper rare and precious, they almost immediately turned it into toilet paper. Shows you what their priorities were.
Wonder what they used before.

Velvetleaf is a pretty good substitute but it’s only available in late summer and early fall. It’s an agressive weed so no farmer will miss it.
(A good toilet paper will have superior structural qualities).
My problem with Kleenex is that after being used, users will just leave them around anywhere. I don't know if it's because they don't have pockets or what!!
I have used the “old” Sears Roebuck catalog

I have been utilitarian since I was a kid. My wife is modern. Her clothes have no pockets. So she would not have anywhere to store a used tissue (in the unlikely event that she wanted to do so). But it also means she has no place to store an unused tissue.
I cannot do without pockets. I went to Lowes today. In CT, as in many other places, plastic bags are prohibited by law. The shopper has three choices: use a cart; use your pockets; or juggle. I used my pockets. Four pockets in my pants (although 3 of them are full of male essentials: wallet, phone, knife, keys), four pockets in my vest, and one pocket in my shirt. I have been known to stuff extra items in my socks, which can double as a pocket in an emergency. I try not to use a cart because it enables me to buy more stuff.
My wife dragged me out shopping a couple years ago and picked out a couple pair of pants she wanted me to try on. The pants were probably designed by a woman. Not only were the pockets so small that I could barely get my fingers into them (and if I tried to get my hand in with the thumb included something would have ripped), but if I did get my fingers into the pockets I could not get them in as far as the joint between my palm and my thumb. Also, the zipper, which is an essential part of male apparel, was so short I could not get my hand in to the opening it left when unzipped far enough to get hold of the item I wanted to extract.
Fashion is a scam.
