Good morning happy holiday too all. I have 2 trips planned in the coming year and the thought of lugging my Nikon gear through Europe and the Middle East is causing me to look into lighter gear. A go travel or just bought the Sony A r7 and highly recommended it. I am just beginning my research and starting there. Can you help with your experience of the Sony or other options. Thank you as always. It’s also difficult to leave years of cameras and lenses.

There are lots of fixed lens bridge cameras that take high quality photos. You might look at those to document your travels.

Olympus is my choice. The internal stabilization is such that you almost don’t need a tripod. It is a joy to travel with! I have the m5- Mark III.

I have a Sony rx10mk4 and love it. I also have a canon sx 70 that produces great images and is smaller.

I own a Sony A7r iii and it works great for landscape, Astro, and wildlife. Very nice in low light.
For me though there was no change in weight or size as the lenses are the same size as for my Sony A-77.
(Sony did just introduce a few small primes though)

You really don't save any "weight" when you change to a full-frame mirrorless camera. Why? Because full-frame lenses are just as heavy and if you retain the legacy F-mount versions, they don't change at all. The FF mirrorless bodies are more compact in size, but the weight difference of the smaller body is trivial.
Changing to a smaller sensor size is a way to lessen both the size and weight. Changing to a superzoom is an option or a pocket-size models like Sony's CyberShots or Canon's PowerShot put a lot of sensor technology in a body the size of a deck of cards, capturing in RAW for future editing.

Thanks for the enlightenment I had the false impression hat mirrorless was much lighter. Big expense for no change in weight . As always great advice

That is not entirely true. The Sony A7C is a great full-frame camera that weighs only 509g and is smaller than most APS-C and Micro 4/3 bodies. The 28-60mm kit lens that comes with it weighs 167g. Sony also just issued tiny but very good prime lenses at 24mm, 40mm, and 50mm, each weighing about 160g. All of them are quality G-lenses. Add to that the 85mm f/1.8 that weighs 371g. Furthermore, Tamron is building light-weight zooms for Sony that have a huge fan base. Sony made it possible to build a travel-friendly, quality full-frame kit.
