As soon as you purchase your mirrorless lenses, you will know how to become a photographer.

Ain't that the truth!

Only if you knew enough to first buy a mirrorless camera!

It is called Gear ACQUSITION Syndrome for a reason! It is about acquiring, not selling!

OH! I forgot, you can also spend money on acquiring more storage space for ALL OF YOUR STUFF!!!!

I am also in doubt about moving up to a Z camera. I have a D 7500 which I really like. Have taken about 12,500 shots in SA and Antarctica, and 14,000 on a month long safari in Africa. I have about 30,000 total shots on this camera. Am getting into astrophotography through a Meade LX 200 8 inch telescope and a Meade L65, 5 inch telescope. Do I stick with the 7500, or go to a Z611 or a Z 711? Any thoughts?

Full Frame is substantially better for astro than crop sensor - whether it is mirrorless or DSLR - FF is the way to go.

Ok, if I accept FF is better, which way to go? D611 or D711, I will stick with Nikon so lets not make it more complicated by adding in other platforms.

For Astro - that is an interesting question - I'm inclined to say the Z6ii as it will handle noise from the higher ISO just a little better and you probably don't need the higher MP count as you will likely by framing your shots without a need to crop in more in post production.

Either way, you will want to have fast lenses - if you are buying Z mount S line lenses you will want the 14-24 2.8 S or the 20mm 1.8 S which is also awesome for this and substantially cheaper than the 14-24.

I am sure that either camera (Z6ii or Z7ii) will serve you well, so if you are also very into landscape photography then go ahead and get the Z7ii as the higher MP count will benefit you more here.

Bottom line: either camera will do a great job if you have the right lenses (mentioned above). If this is just for Astro stick with the Z6ii, but if you are also going to be doing landscape then get the Z7ii.

I’m actually using either a Meade LX200 - 8” telescope with a 2” adapter with a Nikon mount, or a Meade L65 - 5” telescope with a 2” adapter. Both are set up with ambient light filters. The telescopes are the focus so no lenses will be used

Z6ii is probably fine then - as you will not be doing landscape.

I don't have experience with telescope photography, so cannot speak to it. (Note, though that it is a future desire.) But I have discovered when taking wide shots of the night sky as a landscape, higher resolution is better. Since stars are point sources of light (well, ideally, anyway...the atmosphere can do some weird things to them), higher resolution is better.

For those of you with Nikon F mount cameras and lenses, are you planning to stay with the F mount, or are you planning to switch over to Z mount gear? And, what are your thoughts/reasons for either option? I guess there is a third choice, that is, to build a collection of both F and Z systems. Another question is more speculative: Do you think Nikon will support both systems for the long term, or will they drop F mount gear before long? Frank

If you are not into sports or wildlife, then the best reason for going to Nikon's mirrorless is their superior image quality LENSES - but to take advantage of this you need to be able to AFFORD them - and GET them !

One would think Nikon will stop manufacture, but their long-term plans may be different than Canon's mentioned earlier. If / when they stop manufacturing, there will be an end of service too. It's harder to say for lenses vs camera bodies, where service for a camera ends may 2- to 5-years after they stop selling them, somewhat dependent on the class of the body.

Nikon already won't service Grey Market so who knows what their ideas will be on lenses.

Do you think there is a chance that when Nikon stops making F mount lenses and bodies that a third party manufacturer could build bodies? It seems there will be enough lenses out there to support it.

Another intriguing option might be for Nikon to develop an FTZ adapter with a focus motor.
