I’m retired so Z lens are out of my price range. I have been using F lenses and the adapter with great results.

Why??? You have all you need/want for the rest of your life. Whatever happens to the F mount shouldn't affect you should it?

Nostalgia I guess. Maybe it’s a reminder that I too am becoming more a part of the past than the future.

I'm keeping my F cameras since replacing all my F lenses would cost as much as 10,000 dollars. I do like the Z system for a lot of things, but find flash photography easier and better with the F cameras. My thought is to keep the F system and hope someday Nikon will produce the equivalent of the D500 in a Z camera. While most of my shooting is done FF, I like keeping a crop frame camera to utilize the 1.5 factor on longer lenses. I know the FF cameras can be set to crop frame specs but I prefer to just have one body set up and ready to shoot without having to switch modes back and forth. I have a Z50 right now and while it is a fun, small camera to shoot, it doesn't match up to the D500.

When you do flash photography, Are you aware that mirrorless cameras have LiveView Boost (or similar name depending on brand) ? This feature allows one to see the subject clearly but you don't see the simulated exposure on the screen.

I just plain lucked out two weekends ago when i checked amazon.com ,b&h, adorama, etc amazon said they had ONE Just ONE Z7II body for 2996! amazingly it was still there when i hit purchase immediately and i received it that Monday morning. I had rented both the Z6II and the Z7II prior to purchase so i knew i also wanted the 50 1.8 which is my new “Always on” lens. i have since bought a 24 1.8 and that’s perfect for me. i can shot 80-90% of what i shoot with those two primes. and what primes they are! amazing edge to edge sharpness WIDE OPEN. Yup. Add to that amazing color rendition, pop and bokeh and i’m a convert to Z. I still have my 24-70 f2.8 VR, 70-200 VR, AF-S 14-24, etc that i can use with the excellent IMO FTZ adapter but I never do except for the 70-200 for the reach. also with the nikons amazing ,now everywhere 45MP sensor I can switch to DX mode and now the 70-200 is a nice 105-300 f2.8.
the new huge diameter z mount allows for such superior optics that IMO the F mount is going to be gradually fazed out over say 5-10 years Nikon being Nikon. There’s room in the world for both the F and Z mounts but for me i am convert to what i feel is the clearly technologically superior mount...Z.
i still have my D750’s they just don’t come out to play these days and have been relegated to backup status in the bag.

That's the key point about mirrorless: you maximize the difference by using the newest and the sharpest ever mirrorless-specific lenses. Mindless GAS to buy yet another new camera body is not what mirrorless is about. Mirrorless is a way of life, seeing the world through new lenses and knowing that light reaches a sensor having never been reflected. If we gave two people each a digital camera and a lens, and after a week we learned one was given a mirrorless camera, who do you think will be better?

How/why are Z- mount lenses superior? Better glass? Better manufacturing? ??????
Some might be better than some F-mount lenses but then again some F-mount lenses might be better than all Z-mount lenses. I doubt that all Z-mount lenses are better than all F-mount lenses which your statement implies.

I'll defer the Nikon fanboys to define the technical aspects of 'why' the Z-mount / S lenses are better.

On a more general basis, the new lenses are new lens designs reflecting the latest thinking and possibilities of computer-aided design, materials and manufacturing, including for Nikon a change in both the flange distance and the throat size. I defy you to find anyone with experience who thinks some or even one F-mount lens is better or even equal to the corresponding replacement in the Z-mount.

DXO can provide the 'facts'. I'll just make the statement that every single one of the mirrorless lenses is better. Very shortly now, we'll have trouble remembering cameras ever were burdened by mirrors.

That’s a BS answer. You say that Z/S lenses are superior and when someone asks why you ‘defer” answering to someone else?

I don’t have to prove anything. You are the one who made the claim, not me. If you can’t support what you say don’t say it.

First, for what it’s worth, I took your original statement that Z lenses are superior to F lenses as an opinion.
Second, the absence of negative information (as in prove they are not) is not proof that one is superior.
Third, I don’t have an opinion on Z vs F lenses. Frank

How does the Z50 not match up to the D500?

Seems to have superior features such as focus peaking.

The D500 has a better focusing system, as well as a separate processor for the focusing system, so it focuses quickly and accurately, especially for fast moving subjects like birds. While I love the Z50, and focus peaking is a great feature of that camera, it can't compare to the D500.
