Sure - but the OP says he's not using them for backup.

Here is something you don't hear about but I would recommend for LONG term digital storage. Photos, music etc.

For all memory cards and flash drives in a computet, computer, SURE YOU EJECT IT PROPERLY. If not, could cause issues. Sure it's a long shot, but stuff happens.

A sharpie is fine, make it simple: 1, 2, 3 ... or A, B, C ...

How do you tell how long you have been using the card? Or is that an issue?

How do you tell when you first started using a card? Or is than an issue?

I mark mine 1-2-3-4 with a fine silver perm. marker, then wrap clear mending tape over it. Had some for years that way. mine are all black.

A card has a capacity. Our OP's situation is they need enough cards for a long vacation / travel situation, seemingly without offloading images and reusing during the trip. They'd monitor the free space or simply shoot until card A is filled and then replace with card B. Also in the OP's situation, the first image on the card includes a datestamp for that image signifying the start of usage.

My own situation is I have multiple cards lettered both 1... and A.... I have batteries too that are 1, 2, 3, etc. I try to cycle them in that order, but I'm not religious about it. They're not all exactly the same purchase date, but when they started or who is older than others isn't relevant.

I agree with the keep it simple 1 2 3 approach, If these are new cards and you have a bunch of similar old ones, you can label 11,12,13, etc to differentiate that group.
If you expect to re-use the cards while on the trip, be certain you have a procedure for field backup and formatting the cards. Stick to that strictly, the last thing you want to do is format the card before it has been backed up.
Personally I try to never run out of fresh formatted cards on a job. Cards are cheap.
We carry 2 card cases - a blue one for fresh formatted cards, and a red one for exposed cards so we can't make a mistake. Also we try not to fill them up, we change them at lols in shooting, this way we almost never have "I'm running out of card space anxiety. The other thing this does is give the security of knowing that while on a shoot, the new card always has a higher number. If you always do it the same way, you won't make a mistake.
And BTW you are right to stress a bit about it BEFORE the fact -just ask a Chef.... Mies en Place

It doesn't matter to me when I purchased the card or when I started using them.
I have NO IDEA for any of them. I know some are over ten (SD)/fourteen (Memory Sticks) years old because that's how long ago I purchased each of the cameras. My most recent SD purchases were a year or two? ago.
I'm not concerned about how old they are or if one has been used X times more than another.
Nor if one card has had more images stored on it compared to any other card.
A card is either going to last a very long time or it isn't. I will find out when it happens.
My cards are numbered 1 to 8 and used in that order. And yes, #1 receives the most usage. I haven't used numbers 6 to 8 yet.

I have the same thoughts, and with no vacation last fall and no whale watching (no cruise ships) last summer, card #1 get used a little over and over again. Reformated every few days.

I only worry about the 'order' when I'm out for a long time with no or limited off-load ability, say a week in a tent at Oshkosh and shooting 1.5 to 2 cards per day. If I spend a morning at McDonalds and power, it's useful to know card 'A' and so forth are the ones to be copied first to an HD if I need to erase some to continue shooting for the full 7-days of the airshow.

I'm a 32GB guy, with cameras that are 22 to 24MP, that's about 1000 images per card in RAW. My cards and cameras are approaching 8 years old, back when 32GB was more 'standard' cutting edge like the 64GB cards are now.
