I have a Nikon 16-80mm F 2.8 DX lens which we bought refurbished from Nikon. We paid $599 for a lens which new would be $1068, because Nikon was offering deals on their refurb lenses. it had a 90 day warranty and came in a white box, not the usual Nikon gold box. But it performs just like a brand new full price lens.
As I have mentioned here before, Nikon refurb lenses have a tiny raised dot at each end of the serial number, so if you ever buy a lens and it has those dots, you got a factory refurb.
I have several refurbished lenses, mostly from Nikon, but from some of the 3rd party manufacturers as well. I also have bought a few refurbished camera bodies. I have never had a single problem with any of them and they have all appeared 'as new'. One of my camera bodies actually had 2 shutter actuations total and none have had more than a few hundred. I'm guessing that most of the lenses have had a similar experience. With the reliability of gear that we have now I wouldn't worry much about the lack of a long term warranty. The money saved is well worth it. Buy the lens and just be happy with the good deal.

I am sorry to disappoint you but Nikon refurbished lenses are not carefully evaluated and adjusted to official 'new' specifications by a Nikon technician. Where did you hear or see that? They are tested the same way new lenses are evaluated by robot or quickly looked at by technicians working for Nikon or subcontracted. I worked for Nikon for over 5 years and lenses that were returned by customers were usually returned because, "they did not like there COPY of the lens", 999 times out of 1000 there was nothing wrong with the lens, usually operator error. The one out of 1000 received further evaluation by a technician who returned to to factory specs, if they could not accomplish this quickly the lens was usually discarded.
I can not believe what folks put on this site.
I am sorry to disappoint you but Nikon refurbished... (

I was given that information by the Nikon regional sales representative. He lived in and was based in Los Angeles area, and covers California and Nevada. He was at a local Northern California dealer's special "Camera weekend" where some major (Canon, Nikon, etc.)distributors were offering products ( new, refurbished) at lower prices than usual. Years ago I visited the Nikon So. California repair facility to drop off my camera for warranty service and was given a brief tour of the work area. There were many electronic work stations with various machines, and a large area with boxes and drawers supposedly filled with replacement parts and components. Since you worked there you know what actually happened. My refurbished camera bodies and lenses have all worked well.
