A digression into “Negative Space” scenarios and muted backgrounds.
Fleeting moments of serenity amid the manic chaos of match play.
Venue: Maryland SoccerPlex (Germantown) Fields 14 (first 3) & Field 15 (4th image)
Kit: Nikon D810 with an AF-S 200-400mm f/4 IF ED VR Nikkor on a Sirui P-424 Monopod
The 3rd image? A cute little girl in a chic sundress so excited with her new Apple Watch! Couldn’t resist sharing her joy as she dashes across the pitch…
Can color harmonies, chiaroscuro and composition aesthetics create intriguing imagery?
fyi, The SoccerPlex has hosted the Washington Spirit of the National Women's Soccer League.
The Final Image is a Field Map of the SoccerPlex’s 24 Soccer Pitches. The matches in this post were all on Nature Bermuda Grass… the first 3 on Field 14 and the 4th image on Field 15 in the final fleeting hours of sunlight.

These have a dreamy quality in the heat of a soccer match. Thanks for sharing.

So....MD finally got back to playing....that's great!
AF-S 200-400mm f/4 IF ED VR Nikkor...One of my favorite.
Thank you for your kind words Craig... They are greatly appreciated...
The "... dreamy quality..." is most likely compliments of aesthetically superb soccer venue and a very fast Nikkor wide open. Combine this with 22 charming young ladies (actually 23 counting the Apple Watch little girl) who provided an endless array of photo opportunities...
All the best on your journey Craig...
And please stay safe...

Only in my dreams Paloviejo... Montgomery County Health Department regulations trump everything... Currently it's mask and I'm still waiting for the Spring Schedule... So far it's only one parent per player allowed on the pitch and then only behind a marked off restricted area.
I'm patient... And have absolutely confidence we will triumph over Covid eventually, the issue now is to minimize the trauma and death it's currently leaving in its wake... Covid rages on, but hopefully its days are numbered.
Thank you for your support Paloviejo!
All the best on your journey...
And please stay safe...
"...AF-S 200-400mm f/4 IF ED VR Nikkor...One of my favorite..." Mine to Doug...
A massive beast that has long been an optic of choice for soccer in Europe...
btw, love you epic post "Feelings of Solitude"

Thank you for sharing...
All the best on your journey Doug

Nice work Thomas. In the download you can really see the quality of the shots.
It's so nice to see the game being played again.
Be well and be safe.
"...In the download you can really see the quality of the shots..." Thanks Jules... You're way too kind...
btw, those are deliverables averaging about 15x20 inches... which can easily print up to 16x24 inches.
I shot two games back to back that day... 180+ minutes of continuous soccer action...
Well over 2K of images... Amazing considering Nikon states with an EN-EL15a battery the D810 is CIPA-rated 1,200 shots per charge using the optical viewfinder. Well folks I double that on this day... lol Albeit I had VR switched "Off" on the 200-400mm otherwise my spare EN-EL15a battery would have been required for the second match.
The down side of the D810 is 5 fps and an 18 frame buffer, although I've never hit the wall likely since I don't spray & pray. If I can't get it in 3.6 seconds? Oh well... Still miss the 10 fps of my D3 and 8 fps of my D700 with MB-10 battery grip. btw, my 24 megapixal D3x will do 5 fps in 12 bit RAW which actually works just fine for sports imagery.
Thanks again Jules and please keep posting your stellar sports imagery.
And always stay safe...
