What is that? Curious Lesser Goldfinch

The little guy was feeding with a few house finches when suddenly he twisted to look at something out of sight from inside the blind. Then he left in that direction. Since the house finches kept feeding I am speculating it might have been a female Lesser Goldfinch - it is mating season.

90D, 100-400L mk2 @ 400, 1/1000 @ f/8.0, ISO-400
hand held at about 10', center point AF, spot meter on the bird's head

Nice, and I'm glad you gave him plenty of room in your photo to look over his shoulder. He does look intent.

Nice photo, Robert. I appreciate your 400mm from 10โ€™ distance info. Hopefully I can try that soon now that itโ€™s springtime.

This is such a good one. I remember that calls to mind that I'm waiting for my pet to come home. Looking at the bird in your photograph, I get the impression.

Thanks. My rule of composition is leave space to look or move into unless you are trying to create the feeling of limits.

Leaving space for movement has been a standard of action photography and drawing/painting before that.

They are cute and colorful, esp. in the spring when colors are a bit more vivid. Diet helps also and besides this area having good feeding for them the food I use the most (Pennington bought at Walmart) has a vitamin/mineral & fruit flavored coating they call Bird-Kote.

thanks, One of the things so many love about the Canon 100-400L is how close it focuses. I often use it for butterflies and bees etc. instead of changing to a macro lens. The first edition focused to a bit over 3 feet and the Mk2 is supposed to focus to just at 3 feet but some copies have achieved focus at at little as 32 inches if posted stories are to be believed. The official focus distance is measured from the sensor but most measure their own photos from the lens.
