Some of us live (or have spouses!) that live in "I'llgetaroundtoittommorrowland".

Thus, their phones, tablets and computers get filled with redundant and mostly useless old photo files. There are several software solutions to removing these byte-eaters. Can anyone provide a recommendation based on personal experience for a good, cost-effective one?

I would not trust a program to make deletion decisions for me.

Good point. As you make your decision look for programs/apps that display images thought to be duplicates, then you make conscious actions to delete the extras. I have seen several posts on the topic but none came up in a quick search.

More specifics needed ... what devices, what applications do you use, do you backup, what file types
I use a great free dupe finder for Lightroom ... but if you are not using Lightroom my recommendation would not be valuable.

A good duplicate evaluation program is “Awesome Duplicate Finder”. If will go through all the images in a folder and present you with a list of images that are duplicates or close to being duplicates. It gives you a percentage similarity.

You can tell it to delete either of the images that are similar.

I would first copy ALL the images to an external drive. That gives you the ability to restore an image deleted in error.

Several are available, awesome duplicate dinner is one. No matter which one you use, DO NOT LET IT DELETE THE FILES. Delete the files will be up to you after carefully deciding which one to delete.

Before you start, make a backup/copy of everything!!

Wife has this problem, !,000 pixs stored on her phone. She can not see well enough to trash the bad ones. When she lays her phone and is outside I dump all the bad ones for her. The first time she ask me to down load hers to the computer it was 765 pixs. NEVER again !!!

IF you are using Apple Photos, Duplicate Annihilator is great.

Otherwise, On1 advanced search allows you to find duplicates quickly in any folders without creating a catalog.

You might take a look at XYplorer. Very robust file manager for Windows including a multi-faceted duplicate finder. There is a free version and a pro version ($40). Both versions have a duplicate file finder function. Search for either xyplorer free or simply xyplorer.

I have used two apps successfully in the last couple years. Gemini2 (Macpaw software - also use their Cleanmymac app) is the more comprehensive. The other is Duplicate Detective which has a simpler interface. Both offer focusing on specific folders as well as comprehensive full system use. Agree with others - don't let the software go "full auto" - review and edit selections as necessary -- and have a backup copy on another drive in case of over-aggressive deletions !

WELL, IT’S BEEN DISCONTINUED
XYplorerFree, the XYplorer Free Edition, has been discontinued as of 10-Jan-2017. It lived for three years but eventually the extra work grew too much to handle alongside the Pro Edition.

As the free site notes you can still download it and use it. It's just that they are not maintaining it. It works well. I used it until I decided to go with the pro version to support the product.

There was a duplicator search function in Elements that would search out similar photos even differing names and sizes and present them for deletion (or not). I used it sucessfully, but not sure its in current version ....
