I would wait...the Apple silicon iMac is obviously right around the corner based on the cancellation. Based on the relative performance of the M1 mini and MBP...the new one will way outperform the iMac Pro at a lower price. I’m a long time Mac guy...and the only remaining iMac Pro configuration available is the base model...and it will be blown away by anything running Apple silicon. Several replies suggest that the OP’s iMac is failing but he only said it was limited. Old Macs do still run well...my wife’s 2013 Air is running Big Sur quite nicely as is my 2015 MBP...she doesn’t use her laptop as much as her iPad and I wanted. Bigger screen for photo PP on the road so I skipped the 1st gen for that reason. I’ve got a current gen iMac 27 that is adequate for most of my LR and PP work...it’s only a year or so old so I won’t replace it for awhile.

I own an iMac PRO and am still very happy with it. No upgraded needed for me at this time! I would guess my next one (iMac or Mac Book) will have the M1 chip. Best of luck.

There several Mac email sites where informed comments can be sought. Look up io groups on google.

I was days away from upgrading to an iMac Pro 27" when I heard it was being discontinued. So now I am wondering if buying a discontinued unit is worth the hefty investment. my current machine is a late 2012 model with i7/3.4 GHZ intel processor, 32GB. I am starting to run low on RAM and this model can not be upgraded to Big Sur OS.....................Any thoughts on what my next move should be??

You might consider the regular iMac; lots cheaper and better at some specs.

Apple's official reply is that the current iMac can be configured to do the job of the Pro model so there is really no reason to continue with the Pro iMac. I liked the all black color myself. A deep discount would be nice.

I purchased a 2020 27" iMac a few months ago. Yeah, I recently read Apple's decision. I have no regrets. The initial 27" I had worked for 10 years prior to OS changes that weren't compatible. I figure this one will last about as long. Even if I had read/known about the discontinuation, it would not have changed my mind.

I use a 2015 iMac 27" and a 2017 13" MacBook Pro. I use the 13" when traveling and when sitting in my recliner. Great when culling and on the internet. I delete 90% of my RAW shots, do renaming and minor adjustments with the laptop. All serious edits are done with the iMac. I'm excited to upgrade to the M1 27" iMac and then an M1 MacBook Pro, but will be waiting for 6 months to a year after the iMac M1 is introduced. I'll let the early buyers fish out bugs and troublesome issues before I buy.

Skip this generation of iMacs! Get an M1 Mac Mini or MacBook Air or MacBook Pro. Or wait for the M1 iMac, which should be awesome.

Intel Macs are going away. The Apple Silicon systems are too good!
