Factory refurbished lenses?

I'm thinking about purchasing the Tokina 16-28 F2.8 Opera lens. When I went to the Tokina website I noticed that they're selling their factory refurbished lenses for about $300 less that a new one. My question is does anyone have experience with factory refurbished lenses in general, maybe Tokina specifically. The Tokina lens is a good price as is at $6.99, but any extra money in my pocket is better than money out of my pocket. I did notice that the factory warrantee is only 90 days. I don't know if this could/should be a deal breaker. Thanks for your feedback.

If it's a lens you want, that much of a lower price justifies the limited warranty. If you bought it used, you'd likely have no warranty at all.

I have purchased a number of Nikkor lenses refurbished by Nikon with no problems whatsoever. They have served me well and I have saved a lot by doing it this way. I have also purchased several Nikon cameras and I have been very happy except for a factory refurbished Nikon D7200 purchased thru B&H that had more than 26,000 shutter clicks. That was too much for me so I availed myself of the excellent B&H return policy with no problems. They didn't have more D7200s at the time so I purchased a D7500 and it arrived with zero clicks. It must have been a display camera or just an overstock return from a dealer. Very happy with my refurbished purchases so far.

You didn't say whether the $6.99 lens is new or refurbished, but at that price I wouldn't be concerned.

The $699 lens is new. The refurbished lens is a bit over $400.

Sorry, I just realized I put the decimal point in the wrong place. The lens is $699.00 (not $6.99). WOW, that would be a great price. I'll have to do a better job proof reading my work.

I knew that was a typo, of course. I've not purchased a refurbished lens myself, but many of my colleagues, and a lot of UHH folks, consider them to be as good as, or better than, new. If I want another lens, I'll buy refurbished.

I have bought refurbished. No problem.

Normally refurbished by the manufacturer equipment goes through a series of quality control steps to ensure that the equipment is working as intended, something that a "brand new" camera most likely didn't get since QC this deep is reserved to a percentage only, or assembly line equipment that failed upon a step inspection.

I bought refurbished Canon lenses from Canon. Couldn’t tell them from new ones, worked perfectly. Wish I could find Sony refurbished!

I have purchased two Referbished lenses from Canon and a Referbished camera several years ago and all are performing perfectly. I do it again without worry!

I've had good and amazing experiences buying refurb. The good was stuff that worked as it should. The amazing was stuff that didin't work as it should and the 90 day warranty kicked in. I bought a refurb D800, and it wasn't right. when I got it back it was perfect.

95% of my Canon L glass is factory refurbished by Canon. You still get the full warranty and being refurbished I think you are getting a lens that has be checked out better than a new production line one. Also you save a few bucks too.
