I borrowed a friend's old 24-120mm version, and was very disappointed in the results. When I found the new 24-120 f/4 at a used camera shop, I tried it out there, and bought it immediately. It's light years ahead in quality and sharpness. It's my "walk around" lens for my D750 or my D610.

Likewise. It was bundled by Nikon with the 750 plus the grip. The grip remains unused, 24-120 rawwwks.

Seems that this lens really divides the sheep from the goats (photographers from the peepers and geeks).

Never had a 3.5-5.6 so can’t compare or contrast but the f:4.0 one of the most useful lenses I ever encountered. Got a variety of 28-135 left over cuz that was, in its time, THE perfect range for me. So I’m very happy with this just a bit wider version of those.

Finished an assignment using my old 24 -120 3.5 - 5.6. Thought it turned out pretty well but had a few issues. I was wondering about an upgrade. Read Ken Rockwell's review of both the old one and the new f4. He indicates that the old one is one of the worst lenses ever. Wondering about experience with the newer f4. Any comments would be appreciated. Thank you all in advance. My assignment was taking pictures in a forest. Full tree and then a close-up. These were the smaller conifers but more coming. Some of the pictures did have a focus problem prompting the upgrade consideration. Let me know what your opinions are.

I shoot landscapes with two lenses, the Nikon 16-35 f4 and the Nikon 24-120 f4, they share the same filter size.
I have found the 24-120 f4 delivers a very sharp images, I regularly print to 20X30 without issues.
The 24-120 f4 is not light but works very well for me.
I used the 24-120 f4 to take candid's of my son's wedding in the Catskill's of New York and it proved to be a great all in one lens for weddings.
Good luck and keep on shooting until the end.

Thank you. Exactly the information I was looking for. Will probably go with B&H just because that is my go to trusted retailer.

I have one I used when I owned a D750. I have since moved to mirrorless and looking to sell mine. It is in excellent condition, no fungus, haze or anything like that on the glass. Works perfectly. PM me if interested. I have sold items on the marketplace here before with no adverse issues. USA model, not an import.

I got the 24-120 variable vr version with my D700. I thought it was great at that time. The D700 is a 24mp. The combination produced very nice shots. I tried the F4 version and found it did a better job focusing on the edges and focused much quicker. Its negative was it was bigger and heavier. If you can afford the F4 I'd get it and put up with extra weight.

I read quite a bit about the "Nikon Triumvirate" of the f/2.8's. I have my own @ f/4:

16-35mm f/4
24-120mm f/4
70-200mm f/4

Granted, a stop slower, and there is some overlap, but they're also a bit lighter in the bag.

I went to Ken Rockwell's site. I had assumed there was an "old" f4. It appears the "old" lens was a variable aperture. Thankfully I have the f4 version.

I have a history with the Nikkor 24-120 lenses, I had 2 versions of the f3.5-5.6 and also one f4. Both of the earlier versions were garbage for quality on the D700 and D800, and didn't even look good on the D7100. When the f4 came out I didn't feel like spending the money to try because of bad results from the earlier models, even though I love that focal length for a walk around lens. I found a deal for a Grey Mkt f4 that I was able to use points to get for really cheap and decided to get it to try it out. I was VERY happy with the new lens and for a walk around lens on my D800, D810 it is better than my 24-70 2.8G (non VR). When I went to the D850, I had to upgrade my 24-70 to the E model, with VR and that is stunning, and also very heavy.

Bottom line now, if I am going for a long walk the 24-120 f4 is on my D810; if I am hand holding for short walks the 850/24-70 E is my normal pick and the 70-200 is near by with other lenses that may be needed. The 24-120 f4 is my favorite lens for non critical work, but for critical I have to go with the Trinity on either the D850 or the D4.

Undoubtedly the older 24-120 variable aperture is not as good as the straight F4, but it was a decent lens. I used it for many years for PJ work with great success and had many published photos with it. I have since traded it in on a Sigma 25-105 ART which I believe is a nice lens. None are as good as either Nikon 24-70/2.8 which has less range. Not a big Rockwell fan. Best of luck.

Great camera, even though it's 12mp.
I have the lens but don'[t know if it is "old" or "new". How do I tell which version it is? Serial number range?
There were actually 3 versions of the 24-120. The first was a “D” lens - so had a physical aperture ring. The second version was a “G” lens (so no physical aperture ring) and was variable aperture (f/3.5-5.6). The latest version (also a “G” lens) has a fixed maximum aperture of f/4 throughout the zoom range.

Thank you for your wishes. I should have included this information. Have ordered a used one and look forward to working with it. I have a D850 in terms of focal distances, for the product I am working on, I am taking tree pictures. Need two shots per tree a wide angle showing total tree and a close-up of leaves/branches. We shall see how it goes and I will report back.
