One interesting side note about the article. The Ugly American isn't about bad behavior by Americans. The book is about an American who is physically ugly and so goes out of his way to learn the language in countries he goes to and to learn local customs, so that he can behave courteously and blend into society in other countries. He is the opposite of how ugly American is now applied.
The premise of the book is that foreign travelers often behave in an ugly manner, but even those who may be repulsive on the outside can be kind and foster good will by their actions. Now, the term only refers to bad behavior by entitled Americans.
