My wife was recently diagnosed as being asthmatic and I have to say that we were shocked at the cost of the inhalers that were prescribed for her! One is a steroid treatment meant to help prevent episodes and the other is the well known Albuterol bronchial dilator or "Rescue Inhaler" that is commonly used by many. Anyway the cost of these two drugs through the mail order pharmacy associated with our insurance came to just shy of $900.00 for a 90 day supply. While we realized that these drugs would be upper tier drugs that would increase our costs, it turns out that the insurance doesn't cover even a portion of them and that we have to bear the entire cost. Unfortunately, this is out of our reach financially, even short term, and we are looking into other options if there are any out there. Otherwise, I guess it's just deal with it as best we can and that really burns me when we thought we had really good health insurance!

Anyway, I thought I would ask here if this is about what others have encountered while dealing with this condition and how they feel and/or deal with this sort of expense verses treatment issues. While I know that it's entirely about the cost, how is it possible that the insurance companies get away with not covering even a portion of these medications when prescribed and how come they cost so much in the first place? I'm also sure that asthma medications are not the only costly ones that the insurance companies actively seek ways to avoid paying for, such as diabetes meds (ie. insulin) etc. Any feedback and/or suggestions for possible other options would be greatly appreciated, but let's please try not to make this a political discussion and get it moved to the "Attic." Good luck and good shooting to all.

I’m in Canada and every script costs me $4.11. Not sure where you are located but it might me cheaper for you to cross the border if that is an option (when this Covid goes away). I remember a few years ago when there were buses crossing from the US with a load of people getting insulin. Good luck.

Oral thrush produces slightly raised, creamy white, sore patches in your mouth or on your tongue. Oral thrush — also called oral candidiasis (kan-dih-DIE-uh-sis) — is a condition in which the fungus Candida albicans accumulates on the lining of your mouth.

Drugs such as prednisone, inhaled corticosteroids, or antibiotics that disturb the natural balance of microorganisms in your body can increase your risk of oral thrush. Other oral conditions. Wearing dentures, especially upper dentures, or having conditions that cause dry mouth can increase the risk of oral thrush.

Rinsing your mouth after use of these corticosteroids will reduce the risk.

Thank you once again! This entire post has been very informative and I find it amazing just how diverse and knowledgeable folks are on this site and how much one can learn here on much more than just photography.

I believe your first action would be to go back to your doctor and ask if they can prescribe less expensive drug/s.
They should be able to query the insurance company and come up with a more reasonable prescription for her.

If not, you may want to get a second opinion from another doctor and explore buying from a Canadian pharmacy.

Canada is a good option. They even have an on-line pharmacy accreditation process. There may also be an option for requesting an exception to your insurance plan’s formulary (if that was the reason it was not covered). Our plan, however, makes the exception process onerous for the prescribing doctor. Good luck!

Could be your deductible. I use advair 2x daily for asthma preventative & for mild copd; doesn’t cost me anywhere near that even when meeting my deductible. Advair may not work for her; just a thought.

Insurers are much cheaper when purchased online from a Canadian or Mexican pharmacy. However, you have to pay out of pocket, insurance companies will not reimburse you for the expense, nor will those costs be applied to your deductible.

The actual cost of te medication is pennies. What makes it expensive is that the drug companies can repatent it each time they change the delivery method. Probably the most egregious example of this was the EpiPen scandal a few years back when the manufacturer up the price to ~ $600 while the syringe held epinephrine valued on the order of $0.50.
As a doc, I tell my patients to use tools like GoodRx fo rchronic meds, look to the Canadian pharmacies. You will need your physician to write the prescription and while it takes up to 2 weeks or more for the first order to arrive, the savings can be quite substantial as I found out from personal experience for both my wife and me.

Yes, this has been a long time gripe of mine.

I was diagnosed with asthma in my 40's (30 years ago). Back then the rescue inhalers were under $10 and the daily preventative inhaler was about a hundred and both were completely covered by my insurance through my employer. Now, the same two inhalers are about $60 and $380 monthly respectively (in the U.S.) with only about 15% covered by my Medicare drug plan. When I first retired I lived in Thailand for 10 years and the cost there was about $8 and $16 respectively for the same two drugs by the same manufacture. When I moved back to the U.S. I got the shock of my life when I first ordered them. Now I rarely use the emergency inhaler so I go ahead and pay out of pocket for one once a year. I get the other one from Canada for about $50 per month.

My wife inhalers are expensive at the start of the year , but then the costs drop. But, I hope you read this, our daughters friend who has a severe case of asthma was recently gave the Moderna vaccine. All of her symptoms are gone now. She goes to National Jewish Hospital in Denver and they could not believe this. So they made her a case study , to see if it will last and how did this vaccine do this to her. As of today she is still off of her asthma meds. Cross your fingers, that this could be a cure for all who suffer with this.

There's a generic version of Advair called Wixela.

That sounds great, but Pfizer hasn't helped my son.

Caremark which owns CVS pharmacies here in NY is a mess. The local CVS pharmacy honors manufactures coupons to greatly reduce your copayment. The mail order side will not honor coupons. It's the same company. I now drive to my local pharmacy every 3 months and save about $200 in copayments. Even the Caremark reps agree on the stupidity of that Executive decision.

I get my Advair Diskus from Canada for $150 for a three month supply (including express shipping). From what I can find on the internet that's even cheaper than Wixela.

What pops-my-cork is the bill I get AFTER getting a treatment for the medication used. A while back I had to get a scan to check for any remaining cancer activity. In order to do that I had to be off medication until my numbers dropped below an acceptable level for the test.

After nearly two months of being off my medication and the numbers still high, they gave me two shots in the butt to lower them. No big deal except for showing my handsome ass to the nurse. A week later the test was done and all went well...hooray..!

And then.....came the bill....not for the scan and all that went with it but for the two injections....for $8,000 EACH. Had they told me what the injections would cost I would have chose to continue to wait for my numbers to come down naturally.

Jerry, you’re right. Tried it several years ago. For me, Wixela didn’t work that well so went back to Advair. People vary. I changed Pulmonologist last year when other one retired. New prescribed using albuterol inhaler & nebulizer several times a day. Had more shortness of breath so quit using them except as needed which was a lot less; feel better. His nurse told me that happens sometimes & I should tell the Doc. Will see how that goes over.

We just feel so lucky in the U.K. where things like this a totally free. If your a pensioner you no longer even make any subscriptions towards the cost.

I was certified to teach Economics, to YOU they may be free, but someone pays, including you unless you pay not taxes or fees of any kind.
