How do you do this in camera on a Sony SLT-77? I couldn't find it in the Index.

"Selective Color"?

I did a search through the manual, but didn't find it. Of course, that doesn't mean it isn't there.

"Selective Color"?

I did a search through the Sony SLT-A77manual, but couldn't find that feature. The Sony NEX can do that, and they call it Selective Color.

Press the Fn button and go to Picture Effects (bottom right)
scroll down to the one that says 'Part' and use the selector right or left to change to red yellow or blue. Lots of other effects there too.

Thanks. Gives me a place to start.

I don't see it so much as a selection of color, as much as that of contrast. A PhotoShop wand can select the lighter or darker of contrast by its sensitivity setting, or of similar color pixels and build on that and even invert from the selected. Once the desired color selection is identified and copied, it can become a color layer pasted over a grayscale of the entire image using the grayscale of the original color photo.

Correct in all you say. I see this fnction in camera as being aimed at someone who hasn't bought a decent editing programs as yet It is quite easy to do in Photoshop/elements, etc. but combining the effects available in camera with those in Photoshop allows for some interesting possibilities.

Thanks for setting me on the right path.

I have been wanting to know how to get an object in color while the background or other objects are black and white.

Take this apple photo for example.

There are several "apps" for IOS 5/6 devices i.e., iPhones/Pad/Pod. I use some and one of the most flexible is Paintfx. I don't remember if is free or not but it is one of the more versitile around.

the apple would be hard because there are leaves over it. If you can get a shot where the apple has no leaves over it, put it in photoshop elements and create a duplicate layer, then turn it black and white, then select the apple and hit the delete key, this should be an easy way to do it.

Nikons allow you to do that in-camera with "Selective Color" in the editing menu.

So does the Fuji X10 with version 2 update. makes it very easy to select various colors to show

Oh, I agree. I was just saying this tongue in cheek. My camera has this option. Scott Kelby writes of it in his books. Personally, I think everyone should try to experiment with everything because it will give them a better knowledge base overall. I have done it with very good results. But I do see why it faded away as it became too gimmicky in advertizing. Now you do not have to look very hard to find it once again emerging as an advertizing tool. I do think it should be used with an emotional purpose behind it when used.

I'm with Tom. I've fooled around with it from time to time, but it only really works a fraction of the time. Too often, it comes off as pretentious. I like this example (which I posted somewhere else) because it makes a statement. This was from a 9/11 ceremony last year.

You are right, it does make a statement, a strong one. I love this photo!

Doesn't look like anyone gave you a definitive answer - but I guess there are several ways to do it. With any program that allows you to work in layers - such as Photoshop and Paint Shop Pro, make a black and white copy of your shot, then layer the BW shot over top of the colour shot. Then use the eraser to erase the BW apple and reveal the coloured apple underneath. It's easy if you're careful around the edges.

I thought this sort of thing was supposed to die in the 80's.

Many things get overdone or become "old hat".

But it doesn't mean that everyone has done them before.
It doesn't mean everyone has gotten that area to a skill level that they prefer.
It also doesn't mean that certain individuals are tired of it.

If people want to do selective colour, or blurred water, or HDR, or take a photo of Half Dome - even though all of these things have been done a gazillion times before - they are entitled to do whatever they like.

I quite like old ideas being revisited and perfected, or shown in a different angle or slant.
It takes real quality to shine there.

And on the other side of the coin, if Joe Nobody gets enjoyment from his photography by doing a rehash of old worn ideas that everyone was tired of 20 years ago, (that he has only recently discovered) - then good on him. He is on his schedule, not yours or anyone else's.

Also easy to do with PSE (10). You duplicate the layer. Then on the duplicate layer create a black and white mask and paint out the mask on the apple using the brush. Everything is left black and white except the object you painted out.
