I've been going to movie theaters since I was about 7. After I turned 10, and there was a theater 2 blocks from my apartment in The Bronx, I went virtually every Saturday afternoon when I originally could see a double feature, a cartoon and a newsreel for 25 cents (later 35, then 50 then a dollar). I am a TCM wacko and subscribe to HBOMax, Netflix and Amazon Prime Video. I've seen hundreds (thousands??) of movies, mostly good, some awful (Ishtar anyone?) and some great. I like blockbuster actions movies, Film Noir, screwball comedies (Arsenic and Old Lace!), musicals, Indies, etc. I am an equal opportunity movie watcher.

Yesterday it was my privilege to see, for the second time, what I consider to be one of the rare small gems of movie making.I won't see it again for a while because it is too powerful to watch frequently. It had a simple, believable plot, great dialogue, a simple, beautiful score, terrific cinematography and editing; it's three principal actors were exceptional and 2 won Oscars, as did the picture and director (he was also one of the three protagonists and the producer.) In my opinion, which I expect will not be shared by all certainly, it is one of the finest movies made so far. I speak, of course, of "Million Dollar Baby."

My 25 cents; 2 cents ain't worth much anymore.

Its been awhile since I watched million dollar baby but now I'll have to watch it again. I find I like most movies better the second and third time I watch them. I have liked almost all Clint Eastwood movies whether he directs or starts in them and the same for Hillary Swank films who was in MDB. I think I have the DVD on this one.

I nominate "Anne of Green Gables", a roller coaster of emotions! (The first episode.)

Two more came to mind -- if you haven't seen these, please do. One is maybe the best "Who done it" movie ever produced -- with a totally amazing convoluted ending, the other is simply one of the great comedy films ever. I would rank it up there with Silver Streak, Coming to America, Freeby and the Bean, etc. The first is No Way Out with Kevin Costner, the Second is What About Bob. And one more great movie worthy of more than one viewing -- Patton.

Of late, my tastes are starting to run to movies where dialogue rules. I've about had my fill of action-genre films. The only one of those I'll watch anytime is "Bullitt", and it has a great story line to boot.

Off the top of my head:

Tinker, Tailor, Soldier, Spy - Gary Oldman has surpassed Lon Chaney as the "Man of A Thousand Faces".
The King's Speech - The interplay between Colin Firth and Geoffrey Rush is outstanding.
Prime Suspect - Helen Mirren, what can I say?
Tinker, Tailor, Soldier, Spy - BBC series starring Alec Guinness; the way the novel should be treated.
12 Angry Men - Dialogue for the aficionado.
The Shawshank Redemption - This one grew on me, as it did on others.
To Kill A Mockingbird - Brock Peters was outstanding, as was Robert Duvall.
Lonesome Dove - A series, yes, but Robert Duvall and Tommy Lee Jones gave epic performances.
Lawrence of Arabia - Peter O'Toole over the top, but outstanding supporting cast.

I feel I will get some mixed comments on this, and I certainly understand.

I was talking with an older friend not too long ago, and the subject of movies
came up. Our moms would give us a quarter on Saturday afternoons, and
since the movie cost only 12 cents, that gave us a 13-cent fortune to spend
on refreshments. (Oh! Those good ol' days' . . .)

Anyway, the subject came up about a movie that we feel must have been
quickly ripped out of presentation. It was about an older couple who wanted
to both 'leave life' together, rather than one at a time. Their daughter, as we
recalled, was obviously shaken by that idea, and that was what the movie
might have hinged around. The movie ended with the daughter going to her
parents' house, and they weren't in the house. As she was walking back to
her car, the daughter heard music (radio) playing in a detached garage. She
also heard a car running in the garage and the garage doors were closed.
She panicked and ran screaming toward the garage; but she stopped, turned
around, and sadly/slowly walked back toward her car to allow her parents'
their sad desires. That was how we thought the movie ended...

Do any of you recall that movie and/or maybe know its title? Sorry . . .

I can pretty well relate (I think...)
That's what helps me thru most of the TV reruns any more . . .

I remember the movie, but not the title. The stars were two classics, possibly James Stewart and Bettie Davis

I agree; I remember Melinda Dillon's supporting role. She's a great character actress. Another favorite of mine that she had a role in was The Juggler of Notre Dame with Merlin Olsen, from 1982 I think.
