Wow is that a Post Versalog slide rule? I have to wonder how many of us grew up using these before calculators became the common tool? Great Photo!

He seems to know what he is doing, alright. I had one of those a little earlier than that and always hated 'em.

Great shot, John, my favorite camera of all time was my SRT-101.

Great shot for the memory. I bet you can remember all that was going on when it was taken. Still have my Post. A bunch of guys at work jumped on the early scientific calculators at $250. Big money back then. I stuck with the Post until the calculators were done to $50. Now it comes standard on the phone.

Great Portrait!

I still have my Post Versilog slipstick. Occasionally take it to remind myself I can still use it.

Best thing I eveer figured out to do with my log log decitrig was SELL it to an evening Engineering School student for an affordable price. It did him more good than me, who as on his Sales Career journey.

I don't remember what brand my slide rule was, but it was plastic and fairly cheap. My Dad had a beautiful one with a wooden core and what looked like ivory overlay, metal end braces and a metal window (forgot the correct name of that part) with real glass. I don't remember what the brand name was on it. I tried to find out what happened to it after he passed but nobody knows. The one in the photo looks like good quality, too. Love the photo!

K&E Log Log Duplex Decitrig model is what I had in college, 1950-54

Is that a Post or K & E slide rule?

I bought a Pickett slide rule in engineering school days, they didn't cost as much as the mahogany or bamboo slide rules that Post and K & E made.

This is our oldest, at eight months, while I was still in engineering school. He's 51 today and while I would have been thrilled if he'd decided to be an engineer, instead he's worked his entire career, except for four year in the Army, for basically the same company, starting out as a grill cook in a seafood restaurant while in high school, working up to an executive chef at one of their flagship restaurants on Rodeo Drive in Beverly Hills, to where he's now the corporate executive responsible for that same concept, except now for the entire country:

Great photo. I was also in engineering school then and was really good with my slide rule (K&E as I recall) and it is packed away somewhere. After 35 years as an aerospace engineer, I have been teaching it part time and I usually bring out my Curta mechanical calculator in class and they have no idea of what it is or does until I show them. We have 5 children (all adults now). Our oldest daughter started out as a biomedical engineering major (calculus was an "easy A" for her), but decided she liked the biology part, but not the engineering. She got a degree in molecular biology, followed by a masters degree in math and science education. She now is making a good living as a food blogger. Our next 3 got degrees, but not in engineering. Our last will get his degree in chemical engineering from UC San Diego in June. I guess 1 out of 5 isn't too bad.

We're concentrating on one of our granddaughters as a possible engineering candidate. She's a high school sophomore and universities are already trying to recruit her, including my alma mater (with no help from me).

I know it's been a couple of years since I've posted here, but I have an update.

In my last post I mentioned our granddaughter, who we were hoping would follow in my footsteps and go to engineering school at my alma mater. Well, it turns out that she is going to attend Michigan Tech in the fall, but she'll be studying Chemistry. In fact, she was just notified that she's been awarded a four-year, full-tuition scholarship (she lives in Texas so that's going to cover the out-of-state tuition, which is almost four times in-state, so this is a big deal). I was hoping for an engineer, but Chemistry will do. She wants to eventually get into pharmaceutical research. Since she will be starting with a fair number of AP college credits (she has a 4.6 GPA) the head of the Chemistry department has indicated that they might try to get her into their five-year Master's program from the get go, since her AP credits might allow her to finish her undergraduate study early.
