I have one as well and absolutely agree, great all-around travel lens

I have it on my 7D II. It is a great walking around lens. 100-400 is probably sharper, but you lose the wide angle view. If you are shooting for yourself, it is sharp enough. If you are shooting to sell images, maybe not sharp enough. But, a great walk around, light weight lens. It stays on my 7D II all the time.

I got mine for my Canon 90D when I was going on safari in South Africa (see my SA posts). It performed admirably and I am very pleased with it.

I wouldn't use it for "walking around" because I don't think that's what it's intended for. But it is good for wildlife, for sure.

With a zoom range of 18-400 it’s totally intended as a walk around lens.

I love mine. Had it calibrated to my camera body. I am an avid hobbyist.

For very "general" use it is OK - especially travel and judicious PP can help. For more critical work on a budget, I would prefer the Sigma 17-70 and Tamron 100-400 together.....as a tandom
.

Completely agree. It is a good but not great lens best used as a general vacation lens. Like any lens with a very wide focal range, it is far from perfect and has a lot of limitations. But it is very convenient and fun to use, although a bit heavy.

I got mine for Nikon when they first came out. After tuning, I am getting good results with it and plan to keep it. I have have used it for wildlife / birding, but there is better glass out there for that purpose. The 18-400mm is more of a walk around lens and it’s light, compact, very versatile, AF works well on my D7200 and D500, and VR performs well. It does have a couple of quirks, like the focus ring (thin ring near the front of the lens) turns when the camera is auto focusing. The only real drawback is that it is not a very fast lens, so I usually take a 50mm f/1.4 along for those lower light indoor shots.

I changed mine from D5200 to Z50 Love it!
True not full frame but my prime travel lens

They are cheaply made of all plastic, and you'll see a lot of CA (chromic aberration).

Most lenses are made of all plastic these days. Like all super zones, the 18-400 is far from perfect and has a lot of limitations. However it is still better than probably all the other crop design super zooms out there with less distortion and less chromatic aberration. I have one but don't use it very much. I'm usually more interested in wide-angle than telephoto. As a result my general walk around lens for my Canon 7D Mark II is the Canon EFs 15-85 f/3.5-5.6 IS USM which is generally much sharper across the frame within its focal range than the 18-400.

I love mine. While seldom using the 400 end, just having that capabilty from 18-400 makes it a great walk-around or vacation lens. It rarely comes off the camera except for inside shots.

I have the Tamron 18-400mm on my Nikon and it works terrific for my purposes. I really enjoy the range and taking only one lens while traveling. My travels have included: Asia, Africa, Europe, Canada, and USA. It's a pretty versatile lens for my needs. I really don't want to take an assortment of lens to carry each day.

Good luck.

When travelling do not want to lug weight and bulk of full fram D800E and its lenses, that is why sticking to DX . Regretfully no Tamron 18-400 on Z mount , have to use FTZ but full functionality Also carry a wide angle 10-25 nice inside buildings
400 x 1.5 is a very long tele, allows tight cropping and stabilization helps a lot plus high ASA high shutter speed

I bought one last March for my D500. I haven’t gotten to use it because of Covid. Just wondering if anyone calibrated theirs with a Tamron tap in console first?

I like my 18-400, bought for our trip to Antarctica during Dec. 2019 on the Nat Geo Explorer. On my D7500, it is a light and versatile walk around lens on ship or shore.. Swapping limited-zoom lenses on a Zodiac is a challenge and you can't aways quickly zoom on the surprise whale. From the ship's B&H locker, I borrowed a Sigma 150-600 Contemporary lens for a day. It worked great on the ship with a monopod, but I was often frustrated that is wouldn't zoom wider. Link to Flickr Collection: https://www.flickr.com/photos/tonyjag/collections/72157713758443993/
Using the tap-in adapter, I calibrated the focus, as described in an earlier UHH thread https://www.uglyhedgehog.com/t-604962-1.html

I have one on my Canon 70D, and I don't think I have removed it since I first put it on a couple years ago. Far better than the old Tamron 18-270 that it replaced. Not the sharpest lens around but sharp enough for me, and a great walk-around lens for most situations.

I could never get my tap to recognize my lens. Gave up.
