There is an article on the bbc news web site on Holy Loch.

I assume one or two of you have served there.

My wife and I were in La Maddelena in Italy when the last ship from Holy Loch (USS Frank Cable) was assigned there as the replacement for the USS Orion.

Now La Madd is closed... The subs are now serviced in Roda, Spain.

I didn't serve in the Navy but was a tech installing some equipment on the Simon Lake Which I called the love boat. I could of been the Canopus or as it was called Can O Pus It could of been both. I kind of liked the Dunoon area. I never realized how far north Scotland was until I went hiking and it was like almost midnight and I could still see

We were there in May and it was warm enough to unbutton the top button of your pea coat - of course the young locals ran around in shorts and short sleeves.

I was on a cargo ship, USS Alcor (AK259) that transported armament to the subs at Holy Lock. Made so many trips there I actually had a girlfriend there. Loved that place.

Read the BBC article. My Scottish wife marched in band the bomb protest. After welding school, I got orders to the USS Canopus, sub tender in 1975, then crossed decked over to the USS Holland til 78. Worked in Nuc-Repair writing /superving repairs to the primary systems on the Subs. Loved the job and living in Scotland. Been married to my Scottish wife for 44yrs living in Calif and raised our 7 children and now have 22 grandchildren and 1 great grandchild. Life is great, except for Covid, can't visit family much. But really love the submarine work.

I made five patrols out of Holy Loch on the Patrick Henry in late 60's. Always a great time over there.

I made FBM patrols out of Holy Loch on the James K. Polk (SSBN645) and Nathanael Greene (SSBN636) in the early 70s. The memories of horizontal rain and kids playing on shore while I was freezing topside still haunt me. As does the launch ride back to the boat at midnight with fish and chips for friends on duty. Was also there for the Canopus fire that killed 2 or 3 crewmen who were locked up in the brig. Water was sprayed from our fire hoses as an attempt to cool the hull.
