I took a class on animal physiology one time: fascinating things to learn. For example, many birds, especially birds that have to stand on ice, have a "counter-current heat exchanger" system to prevent their body from cooling down. The veins with the cold blood returning to the body from the feet wrap around arteries going to the feet - warming the incoming blood and cooling the blood going to the feet, so it is already cold, thus minimizing total heat loss from the body.
