Apple discontinued Aperture some time ago, I don’t think it will work on newer OS.

It’s been a long time since I ever used Aperture, but after Apple killed it, I believe they had a way to convert all Aperture photos to Photos, their proprietary photo app. If you convert the Aperture library to Photos, then everything should work with Big Sur.

There is a way to 'adapt' Aperture to run on Big Sur. Download an app called 'Retroactive' and follow the instructions. It does work well and saves losing a well respected slightly ageing App.

The current version of Photos is a very robust App that has fairly extensive photo editing capabilities, including Raw conversion and editing. Certainly not as robust as Lightroom, but it is considerably more capable than Aperture.

Thank you. I have been using Aperture since the onset and don't want to learn or pay for Photoshop so now I can continue to use it and will probably use it in conjunction with Affinity. The only caveat is I believe you can't export slide shows with the new OS. Have you experienced this?

Aperture definitely will not work with Big Sur! Not with Catalina either I believe. It works OK in Mojave but not quite as well as with High Sierra. I don't understand why people feel they have to upgrade every time a new updated OS comes out! If you have problems the new OS will fix then fine but if it ain't broke why fix it ???????

There are plenty of reasons to upgrade to the newer OS: Better security, faster, new features and upgrades to Apple software. Big Sur is a 64bit OS, not too friendly to 32bit apps. If the thought of upgrading is daunting, wait for several versions to be sure that all bugs have been quashed and be sure to backup everything before upgrading. I’ve always downloaded the newest OS, even with 8 yo MBP and iMacs. I’ve never encountered any serious issues except for trying to run legacy software, i.e. Aperture.

I certainly don't find it faster - not only me but many others have complained how even Mojave it slows down their older Macs. Also as to security - well if you do heaps of internet stuff then maybe its more secure but for just looking at UHH and a few e-mails well you don't need pile drivers to knock in brass tacks

All a personal preference of course - whatever rows your boat as it were!

Don’t even think about it... if you really need Aperture, buy a used Mac and run the last OS that supports it. And for your computing safety, stay off the Internet on that machine! Turn off networking.

Use a combination of Apple Photos, Raw Power, and Affinity Photo, if you need a modern replacement for Aperture. Find them in the App Store.

Raw Power is the processing engine that used to be in Aperture. Affinity Photo is close to Photoshop in its purpose. Photos provides the organizer and uses the other two apps as plug-ins.

All three run just fine on Big Sur and on M1 Apple Silicon Macs.

You don’t even need a computer for whatever you are doing. Get a cheap tablet and you can still read UHH and a few emails. Any computer is a sledge hammer if that is all you are doing. BTW, I would rather sail my boat than row it.

I agree, but there will come a time when upgrading will be advantageous, so I'll wait and do it then. Thanks for your comment.
