You can purchase a computer with warranty and Windows 10 for less than individual parts and assembly time. Get at least 16GB of RAM. Hard drives are so cheap 1TB or larger depending on your budget.

Stay well.

Let me get this straight, you want a new computer in 2021 but want to run an operating system from 2009 that is no longer supported? That’s a bad idea.

I'm looking for suggestions for a processor, motherboard and graphics card to update an old desktop. Photoshop is the only use that need be considered . I have been using a laptop but I am now on dialysis and on a short leash. The portability of a laptop is no longer a plus. I built the Windows 7 machine my self but can't whip up the enthusiasm to do it again. I'm looking for some guidance for a local computer assembler. Any suggestions would be appreciated. Thanks.

Buy a new computer online. Don't get a computer with Windows 7. The new versions of Photoshop will not work with that old of an operating system. In fact, my Adobe Bridge and ACR would not update because my version of Windows 10 was too old.

Whatever you decide, do no listen to the advice above to use Windows 7, especially do not replace Windows 10 with 7. 7 is no longer supported and 10 is just fine. Some relearning but only where certain functions are located. If you are in So. California, PM me - I have several refurbished PC's with Windows 10 that would run PS.

Why not just buy a used W7 era Dell Precision? If you need to run W10 complete with its heavy payload of bloat/spyware then an old Precision might not be ideal, but I have 2 and paid about $90 each for them about 5 years ago, other than graphics card on one failing they are both working great. No problem at all with anything related to viruses and I think the updates on W10 cause far more issues for the majority.

I am in the UK and I would guess a T5400 could be found in the US for around $50 at the moment, sure its not the latest and greatest but can be cheaply improved and will work fine as long as you dont need W10.

This discussion got me thinking and I did some research, in five minutes I found several articles on video cards for photo/video editing and one of them sold for $4500+.

Loved Win 7, hate Win 10, but had to go with latter since Microsoft (?) blocked usage of some of my programs.

Microsoft has a setting that sorta makes Win 10 look and act like Win 7 (which was my favorite version of all time).
And some third party apps really make it look and work like Win 7. I just hate that page full of small windows that started with Win 8. Give me menus and/or desktop icons any day.

Vid Card: 8GB Nvidia GeForce RTX 2080 Super, GDDR6 ...Although I'm changing this to a RTX 3090 24 GB if I can get one.
Cooling: Corsair H150i Pro 360mm Liquid CPU Cooler

Are you aware that the 11th generation chips are going to be out at the end of March. I would wait to get a pcie 4.0 capability and then an SSD that support this high speed buss. I would also use a Z590 motherboard as they have already been released in preparation for pcie 4.0

Windows 10 does not natively come with that Win 8 start up screen. I've seen some people end up with it, but I believe it is a setting in Settings/Personalization that causes it. You should be able to get back to the native Win 10 screen which is what you want - desktop icons and menus.

Do not upgrade. To old and outdated. Either build one or have one built to your specs at your local comp store. Just make sure it is over Adobe minimums.

I disagree with Gene, for a change. Gamers can be a good choice. They are fast and have good graphics. I just had one built. It is super fast and good graphics. Around a grand.

I purchased a refurbed HP laptop that at that time came with WIN 7. I have upgraded to 32 megs of ram, 1TB SSD hard drive. Now upgraded to WIN 10 PRO. It looks just like the Win7 desktop if you set it up to look like that. Most important is the PRO level of Win10. Look at TigerDirect refurb with WIN10 PRO installed either laptop or desktop units. Hard to beat a desktop for $400.00

My desktop with windows 10 pro was built for me by the MicroCenter store here in Houston. See if they have a store where you live.

Give us more info as to your budget, monitor you will be using, and the video card put into the new desktop has to be powerful enough for the monitor and the programs used like Photoshop.
