After using this camera on a tripod and gimbal several times a week in a clean environment (not the beach or dirt), today the buttons on the left as well as play, erase, info and information won't work at all. I can take a photo, can't delete or review, and can't use menu to reformat.
I search the internet and all I found was "maybe stuck buttons". I went over each button carefully, none look stuck to me.
I would appreciate any ideas or information about what to try before sending it off to Nikon.

Did you use any flash triggers? My D500 locks up when using the Yongnuo YN622N-TX in HSS mode. Everything locks up. I mean, the camera becomes a paperweight. Even when taking the trigger off the camera. After a bit of a scare I resolved the issue by putting the trigger back, setting it to another mode and pressing the shutter.

Are you sure there isn't some kind of lock switch that might be activated? I know that my Canon cameras have this feature. If you accidently put the lock on, it prevents the user from changing settings and locks them in.

No, no lock switch such as you are describing on the D500.

Judy, what was the environment like when you were shooting just before everything went to you know where in hand basket? Humidity? Wind, dust, sand? This happened to me with my D500 after an especially sandy beach shoot. What finally got things going again was just brushing around ALL the buttons on the back of the camera and then pushing each button several times.

There is one other thing you could try. Take the battery out of the camera and leave the camera that way for a couple of weeks or longer. Over this period of time, any electrical charge stored in the camera should dissipate. This will result in the camera needing to be set up again as when you first got it as any data retained in memory will also have vanished.

Having patiently waited all this time for the camera's electronics to be fully discharged, follow the instructions you received when you first had to setup the camera from scratch.

If this method fails, then it would seem the camera is in desperate need of Nikon's TLC.

Right, I did put in a newly charged battery but can't get to menu to do anything.

Try the factory reset thing. Should be in your menu. If this doesn't work , you will most likely have to send it in to a Nikon repair facility. Good luck.

I am thinking it might be a loose ribbon cable.

One additional thing to try is to turn the lighting on using the power switch and look to see if the buttons light up like they are supposed to. If they don't, that would be another big vote in support of a bad ribbon cable...

Thank you for all your help. I am sending it in today. No buttons light up when I turn it on. Only the top control panel. I used it last week in a clean non windy dry environment. It travels in a camera bag. It’s going in for repair.

Just taking the current battery out and reinstalling it might be all you need to do. If that does not solve the matter, switch batteries. And/or recharge the battery.

I think the OP should call Nikon and after that perhaps sending the camera in for repair. I think it's a problem that can't be solved by the user.

Hey all. I have done every thing you all suggested and nothing changes. I sent it off. I will let you know what happens. I got similar suggestions from the other Nikon boards I contacted. Thanks.
