Not all technicians are equal. Not all technicians are even competent nor wise. It's obviously true that an older computer was not made for a newer OS. It's not necessarily true that the newer version of the OS is not OK for the older hardware. Apple provides a list for that and I see it cited above here. Apple will not install an upgrade if the hardware cannot handle it.

The same truism would apply to Windows and even Linux but the authoritative list of compatibility is harder to come by for the usual reasons.

The idea that he would keep his computer 8 upgrades behind means one of two things.
1. He is not connected to the internet.
or
2. He is very ignorant or foolish or both.
Not all technicians are equal. Not all technicians... (show quote)

1) I *hope* his Mac is not connected to the Internet. With no upgrades for that long, there are serious security vulnerabilities.

2) It is likely that people are fearful of change (such as OS upgrades) because they don't know enough about something to proceed with dealing with it. So they let it fester or lag behind... unaware that they need to be aware and — because of that need — to seek guidance or to perform basic research about how to proceed.

Perhaps there is no data backup, and that means there is a fear of losing important data or images. Or perhaps there is no knowledge of where to start the process, so they're paralyzed.

As I get older, the more I appreciate that people who seem ignorant or foolish have no intent to be so. They often don't know they are unaware that they need to BE aware. As a life-long trainer in many different situations, I train with one cardinal rule: There are no stupid questions. The stupidity would be in NOT asking a question, out of fear of embarrassment or ridicule. It is honorable to seek answers that we do not yet know, or to ask for clarification of an explanation.

At some point, folks who didn't grow up using computers should probably take a short course in how to get the most from them. Every user should know certain basics, and that includes backup, security, Internet safety, updates and upgrades, the support life cycle of a computer, basic operating principles...

I had problems printing my Ebay postage labels on Safari after I updated. They printed fine in Firefox.
