In the UK the license plate stays with the car for life and goes from owner to owner, unless you want to transfer it to a new or other car, people pay thousands of £ pounds for a named number, my brother won't tell me what he paid for "HOLLY", his daughter's car. Back in the sixties I had the chance of buying a car with DAV1D, for £50, that plate now would be several thousands.

If you want to have an "offensive" license plate on you car, move to RI.

"Judge: State ban on ‘offensive’ license plates is unconstitutional. The Tesla driver with the controversial “FKGAS” plate will be able to keep it." I guess "fracking" is offensive in RI.

Feel as if I should come to the defense of my home state. We can be a contrary bunch. The Commonwealth tossed Roger Williams because he had the audacity to believe in and support religious freedom, a notion which eventually found its way into the 1st Amendment. So he founded RI where unlike the Commonwealth he treated the native Americans with dignity and respect as equals. 1st colony to renounce allegiance to the British crown but the last to ratify the US Constitution. So I guess we like to start trouble but not in a rush to follow through. Smallest state but longest name until we just removed 'Providence Plantations' from it last Nov. BTW the judge struck down the restriction on the plate because the RIDMV had no good reason for it and was inconsistent in what it permitted or restricted.

In California in the late 70's, we had a blackboard at work devoted to the unusual license plates we saw. Even better when the car was "matching". Noteworthy:
Large black Mercedes sedan; IRS BAH
Yellow VW convertible with somewhat flamboyant driver: IMRU12

And you better not try to display your affection for certain soy products.

ILUVTOFU is right out.

For a while my state had a bizarre numbering scheme (after we hit 999-ZZZ), which was a number, followed by 4 letters, and then another number.

I’ve been wondering if 8AD-AS5 was legitimate.

The best license plate I ever saw was in Columbus Mississippi, home of Mississippi University of Women. It read "HOTNWET" on the back of a little sports car. I could just imagine what that young lady looked like!

Well, if you have to use that type of language you need to go back to school. Your vocabulary is way to limited. If you don't have anything decent to say don't say it. End of my say.

The Sons of Confederate Veterans in Texas ran up against a brick wall when they tried to get license plates with their emblem which features the Confederate Battle Flag. And Texas DVM does have a table of words, phrases and alphanumerics you can not use on personalized plates.

A friend of my son reportedly saw the license CIXLSD on a car and had a difficult time figuring it out. It has nothing to do with drugs, legal or illegal.

Like a couple others here look at it backwards.

I prefer the clever license plates. Famous urologist license plates are: 2PC ME and PP MD

A respected Urologist, sadly no longer with us, here in England had H20 DOC.

That's clever. I had a motor cycle tag for 30 years that said PUTTIN, which if you ride is slang for taking a ride.

I once saw a pickup with license I♥MYGUNS. (This is Texas, after all . . . .)

In the 1960s I saw a license in California SYD666. If you're a CPA or tax guru you might recognize SYD as the acronym for Sum of Years Digits, a type of depreciation allowed by the IRS. I'd been studying that subject in class recently and wondered if 666 was, indeed, a SYD (other than the usual interpretation of the number). It turns out that it is a SYD, the sum of the integers from 1 through 36. I've often wondered if the plate were an accident or if the driver were a CPA. (I won't describe how I went about calculating that while driving the Harbor Freeway to class.)

There was one plate they banned once they figured it out. The person had it for awhile. FU311.
