Automatic Substitutions in a Super Market. Is this something they do in the UK? Even with the Pandemic we choose our own purchases in CA, USA or have I been staying home that long?

When ordering for home delivery in the UK, we have the choice of sustituting or not if an item on the list is no longer available. Global or by item.

To be fair, Sainsburys (UK supermarket) does a reasonable job with substitutions. However it messed up once with a subsstitute cat food ("if you think I'm eating that, think again"!)

That reminds me of a country boys letter home; "Dear Ma, today I learned that Alpo taste better than Whiskas"...

Thank you for the clarification. Actually I have never tried food home delivery in the USA, only Amazon, eBay, or other single item orders of packaged food items, but never an entire home delivery of a weeks groceries. They might do subs for that.

Pretty much all major UK supermarkets do online shopping. You can save your normal shopping list so you are reminded of your regular purchases. Some online supermarkets do a price check and charge the lowest price of each item based on comparisons with competitors. You can have home delivery or drive your car to the supermarket parking area and someone will put your shopping in your boot (trunk) for you.

Allowing substitutions in your online grocery order is kinda like Forest Gumps box of chocolates ....

Was once an amateur radio operator and ordered a headset from Sears. They substituted with a copper bottom tea kettle. I never did figure out how to use it.

You make up your complete basket and order it with card details. Money not taken until delivery is completed. As mentioned above you can choose 'no substitutions'. We take substitutions because we get e-mail notification before delivery and we can still choose not to take them. During the pandemic we must not touch them, the delivery driver will take them out.

This sort of thing still happens but it is rare, and when it occours it is all the more difficult to understand.

The Supermarket we use is partnered with a chain of department stores and when the store had to close for the lockdown they switched a lot of employees to home delivery - and they looked after the oldies.

Bit more expensive, but I can't put a price on that service.

The US has supermarket drive-up or delivery on pre-orders, at least in FL. Here one can indicate whether or not to accept substitutions when setting up the order.
