I the opportunity to pick up this EPSON STYLUS PRO4000 printer simply if I want to pay for having it serviced.. whatever that means. What do you think? I've seen a quote of $250 for the service. i have no idea what the ink status is... that will probably be a little pricy.

Plenty of info out there just a search away. Looks heavy duty.

You can purchase a color laser printer new for around the same price. Better quality and faster printing along with more printing per cartridge than the ink jet printer.

If you plan on printing photographs, a laser printer is a very bad idea.

Laser printers work by electrostatically adhering tiny bits of colored plastic ("toner" to the substrate surface and then melting them on with a heated platen. Due to the relatively large size of the plastic bits and their inability to truly fuse together, this very much limits the amount of tonal gradation they can produce. Inkjet printers "spit" ink at the substrate which then dries on the surface - since the liquid ink droplets are far smaller than laser toner and the liquids can blend more effectively, the outcome is a far better image.

Laser printers are dandy for business output like colored charts and graphs, but for serious photographs they are quite inferior.

Just a thought, is it compatible with your operating system? This printer is from 2003-2004 and the drivers may not work on windows 10

I would check to find a source for ink before even taking it for FREE. Epson's web site only lists one of the Black cartridges available for $110, the other 7 colors are not available.

What kind of service is needed in the $250 quote?

When was the last time anyone printed from it?

Probably not a good deal at all.

I had that model 12 or 13 years ago! Run away from this deal! The Pro 4000 was notorious for head clogging if left idle for more than 2-3 days.

Have you seen a nozzle check?
I think this technology is pretty old but it was a work horse.
Having said that, yes, explore newer technology for a little more.
You can probably buy bulk ink cartridges for it to keep ink costs down.

Canon Pro 100 used, or Pro 200 new, would cost less over time.

Laser printers are for office use. For photography, you want an ink-jet printer.
