Thanks to all who replied. After reading the comments I have decided that it really isn't worth buying a new lens and will stick with what I have.
The OP seems to have gone with the general consensus :) :)
Slot Canyons and Waterfall Closeups not withstanding (which are not the typical scenery in the Rockies), I think he will be served well without needing a wide angle lens for his trip.

We are planning a trip to the Rockies starting in late May and am wondering if it would be worth it to add a new wide angle lens. I have a D7100 with a 18-55 lens. I wonder if it is worth purchasing a little bit wider lens. Specifically, Tokina 11-16mm f/2.8 AT-X 116 Pro DX Autofocus Lens. Would that lens be that much more beneficial?

I have a Tokina 11-16mmF2 since it came out. I use it extensively on my trips in Europe for landscape shots as well as here at home around the country, and have never seen such ghosting and flaring as per the test results you indicated. I am sure you will need to crop your images, so why do you want to to change your 18-55mm.. I Also have a D7100 with the same lens currently on the body. I als odo a walkabout with my D3S & D300S with other focal lengths. For shooting in the Rockies, I would suggest a prime lens like a 21mm.

Situations where wide angle lenses are nice is when you have an interesting subject in the foreground but want to include as much of the background as possible. For instance say you want to take a picture of someone with a mountain lake in the background. The person as the main subject can be not that far away from you because the DOF at 10 ot 11mm is very deep.

I assume from owning the 18-55 lens you are aware of how the wider angle the lens the greater depth of field you get AND the farther away the scenery appears to be. As I eveolved my technique in landscape photography I found myself getting results I liked better when I started taking multiple overlapping images and merging them in Photosjop. But, of course, that's an entirely different ball game. Just sayin' Good luck on your photo trip!

Ditto.

Absolutely not, save your money; you have a wide angle zoom already. You will not gain anything noticeably different from what you already have.

In lieu of a wider angle lens, shoot 3 image, hand held panoramas; or more than 3 if you are inclined. The greater the zoom, the greater number of images

I can tell you that, as a landscape photographer, I rarely use my lens which is wider than 24mm. If I want to take an image wider than 24mm, I simply take two vertical images, and stitch them together in edit post processing. It’s really pretty easy to do.
If you haven’t had a need for a wider lens to date, and are only thinking about needing one for this one trip, then stitching two images together and cropping as appropriate may be another option for you.
Have fun on your trip!

I have an 8mm lens I use with my micro four-thirds camera. It is 16mm by full-frame standards. I find that it is useful for indoor photos but not so much for landscapes. Unlike some others here, I haven't tired of it in the two years since I bought it.

I have the Tokina 11-16 on my 7200. They combine to do some beautiful work.

Now we get to see how many pages this will go on after the OP has made his decision not to get another lens.

Speaking for myself, I would rent a lens that I had an interest in and take it on the trip to see if I enjoyed using it and that it did something that my others did not and then perhaps buy one later. I have quite a collection of things that I thought would be the greatest thing to have that end up being just another thing that I have collected.

Wide angle lenses are practical and can be a lot of fun. Get a good quality one though.

I have been using a Sigma 10-20mm lens for several years. I think you should look at one. Yes, you will get quite a lot more from the wider lens.

Agreed - I have had a Sigma 10-20 on my Canon bodies, which, like yours, is APS-C format. I've gotten many good landscapes from that lens.

Only if it is sharper. I don't think you'll gain much as far as composition goes.

The Tokina 11-16mm lens is one of the sharpest wide angle lenses available. It will serve you well.
