All of my Nikons are SD only but if I had one that uses an XQD card and it enables me to accomplish what I need I would be OK. The cost of the card is minimal compared to the thousands it costs for the camera and lenses. Personally I am glad my Nikons only use SD cards and I am quite satisfied with their performance.

Yes. So far I only own a couple XQD cards and a 128GB CFexpress card that I use in a Z7. All the updates to the Z7 firmware were quick, easy, and without any weird issues including the update to allow CFexpress cards. The camera doesn't seem to work any differently (no noticeable speed difference anyway) with any of the cards I've used. I don't even know if there's a way to tell which type of card one has in the camera short of removing it to read the label.

When you use an XQD card or a CFexpress card in a card reader, you can notice the difference is speed. XQD cards are pretty fast (compared to SD UHS-I) and the CFexpress cards are like 4 times faster than XQD.

The only compatibility issue I've noticed, and it's not much of an issue, is that
1. XQD card readers on the market before CFexpress was available don't read CFexpress cards, no surprise since CFexpress is newer
2. but most CFexpress card readers don't read XQD cards.
Some card readers can work with both card types, but you can't assume that's the case. So, pay attention to that when purchasing a card reader. I have the Sony MRW-G1 and I tested it with both card types, it works.

Does the Nikon Z camera have a firmware update for the CF express cards? If soe did anyone make the switch? I like the XQD cards but it's nice to have options.

But I recently got a 64 CFexpress for the price I paid for the 32 Xqd a year ago. Then had to spend additional $30 for adapter to my PC. Could use the cable to camera but it is much slower.

Thanks, I upgraded the firmware to 3.20 from 3.10. When I looked at the various releases of firmware my camera already had the the firmware for the CFexpress card compatibility; I did not know that. I am happy with the XQD card anyway, but does the CF card actually improve the writing speed? From what I read so far most people don’t see a difference. Apparently the XQD card reader is not compatible and would have to purchase another reader to use the CFexpress cards. Why bother, the cost of these two type of cards are about the same for equal storage

Thanks for the info, lautenk. Wow, 4x faster than XQD! Ain't technology grand! Except now, of course, I would have to buy yet another card reader. I see Amazon sells the Sony MRW-G1 for $99.00. And I used to think that photography was an expensive hobby back in the 80s. Who knew!!

That’s why I like 16gb SD cards and smaller. I still use 1gb and 2 gb cards for my D50!!

CF Express will be replacing the XQD. Currently they are a little more expensive than the XQD. With free software updates for your camera, they work in the XQD slots perfectly. They are also a little faster, great buffering for large bursts.
