I would video opening the box and extracting the lens from the surrounding styrofoam and inspecting it. Then go try it out and decide if you want to keep it or not. If you feel it is damaged, you can submit your video with your return request.

Useful idea. Of course, save all paperwork for it.

BTW: They Styrofoam may've protected the lens from damage.

The "box" debate struck me funny! If I kept all the original packaging for all the gear I have purchased over the years, I would need a warehouse. All that thin cardboard would become a fire hazard. Besides, my lovely wife, who hates clutter and "rat packing" would protest vehemently.

I do keep a few original boxes on hand, along with the Styrofoam inserts, in the event I have to send a camera or lens in for repair.

I don't really see how retaining the original box increases the resale value of a camera or lens. The owner may have kept the box in pristine condition and abused the equipment. A knowledgeable buyer can make a reasonable assessment as to the condition of somethg he or she is about to purchase. Digital cameras have shutter counts and lenses that have been incorrectly cleaned or roughly treated will show signs of wear and tear. Reputable dealers rate their used gear accurately.

If you have a question then return it. Buy it from B+H and they have a credit card and you save the tax.

Maybe the great, great grandkids would benefit when they sell the last working Nikon F to a museum.

Refuse it, send it back, order from a reputable company like Adorama. You got a lens from a poorly run camera store associated with Amazon. The lens is possibly a return or grey market version. Even if it works now, such rough treatment might lead to future problems.

We are constantly exposed to a lack of common sense which surrounds a affects us every day! Yes, bubble wrapping popsicle sticks and shipping a delicate optical instrument with NO padding is beyond belief!! I feel your feustration and anxiety. I'd thoroughly test the lens or return it immediately.

I think in your mind you would always have doubts and you might use it less. Return it for piece of mind and to educate them on packaging, doubt it will.

Hopefully the title isn’t to harsh for everyone but it fits. I order a lot from Amazon as most do. I order the majority of photo equipment from Adorama.

A couple weeks ago I ordered a $4 pack of 500 popsicle sticks for my daughter to build things. They came in a box with air filled plastic bags for protection.

I’ve been wanting a new Canon RF lens which is out of stock almost everywhere. This lens is over $2,500 with tax. Amazon had 1 in stock. I ordered it because it was shipped and sold thru Amazon not some 3rd party. It came by UPS 2 days later. Low and behold they didn’t bother putting it in a box. Just shipped it in the original Canon box. The box is covered with about 8 or 9 big shipping stickers so you can’t really make out what the box is. One corner is slightly smashed or crushed. Nothing major.

I’m very tempted to return it. I don’t know if it has any damage. I assume it’s okay but seriously. Pack popsicle sticks and don’t pack an expensive lens. Who made this decision?

If I decide to sell it in the future someone would see all the shipping labels on the box and may not want it. I hate to return it because I may be waiting a while to find another.

The reason for all the shipping labels is I wasn’t home to sign for it. UPS decided to send it to the UPS store for me to pick up. They created more shipping labels with that stores address as well as additional instructions for the staff there.

My concern at this point is weather or not the lens could have been damaged.

I don't have time at the moment to read all 11 pages of this thread so if this has been mentioned I apologize. Was this sold lens sold and shipped by Amazon or sold by a vendor on Amazon's website and then shipped by Amazon ("Amazon Fulfillment") as is often done, or both sold and shipped by a vendor? Because of living quite a distance from shopping I have long been an Amazon buyer and since the pandemic began even more so, ordering hundreds of items yearly. I have never encountered anything packaged as described for this item that was shipped by Amazon. If I have any criticism of their packaging it would be they sometimes over package, in too large a box. When possible I prefer to buy items that are both sold and shipped by Amazon, although that isn't always possible.

Definitely contact Amazon and report this, even if the item was not shipped by them. They want to know of any vendors that are not performing well in any way. If you choose to return the lens and have difficulty with a vendor Amazon will intercede.

Yes, agree: "Definitely contact Amazon and report this, even if the item was not shipped by them. They want to know of any vendors that are not performing well in any way. If you choose to return the lens and have difficulty with a vendor Amazon will intercede."

Amazon has climbed to the top by paying attention to details and by satisfying its customers. Call Amazon customer service to learn your options. Put your mind at ease.

Take pictures of the box. Immediately upon opening, check the lens for external damage. Take pictures of the damage if there is any. If no damage, try the lens on the camera and take a few pix. If there is any problem, box it back up, call the shipper and go from there. At least you will have evidence of the shitty packaging.

The archaeologists will, someday in the distant future, dig up my Nikon F. Not only did I not keep the box, but most of the black finish came off so it looked like one of those "gold plated" exclusive anniversary editions that some camera manufacturers issued. nonetheless, it still worked perfectly. That camera was build! a brick outhouse! Mine was the original stripped-down model- No FTN meter- bare-bones!
