The stupidity of some.
I save the boxes for all my cameras and lens.
I've had banged up boxes in the past.
I'm more interested in if the product works correctly.
(Unless maybe if the box is totally mangled.)
I keep NO boxes!
If I did, I'd need a warehouse for all of them.
I don't buy for investment (resale),
I buy to use. My stuff is YEARS old.

I'm posting pictures. People can decide what they would or would't do. I have placed the blue tape to cover personal info. When I wasn't home UPS took the package back and put a new label over the original shipping label. This was because they were actually overnighting it to the UPS store for my pickup. As someone asked to see the label (I guess me saying it came from Lexington KY wasn't good enough) I peeled the label back to show the original labels return address.
I also receive on average between 5 - 10 amazon packages a day from different drivers throughout the day. I regularly receive items in the manufactures box and not an amazon box. Someone also stated about their and their neighbors amazon's boxes "always being shipped in an amazon box". It happens all the time. My wife does some business thru amazon and has a lot of packages coming so I'm very familiar with their shipping habits.

I would have that on it's way back to Amazon ASAP, and request a replacement. It will probably be worth the wait.
Good Luck!

Maybe a big decision like this is too big for discussion on just one forum.
I think the title chosen was very appropriate.
Time for a second cup of coffee. Black or with cream? Another tough decision.

You might want to get some food to go with that coffee. This will probably stretch into another day or two.

The photography issue for me is deciding to keep the lens or return it. Trying to decide if it somehow has damage or not.
The irony of titling this as 'stupidity of some', and yet you look for the answer to what amounts to your decision on a forum?

I guess I’m just a stupid person.

Hopefully the title isn’t to harsh for everyone but it fits. I order a lot from Amazon as most do. I order the majority of photo equipment from Adorama.
A couple weeks ago I ordered a $4 pack of 500 popsicle sticks for my daughter to build things. They came in a box with air filled plastic bags for protection.
I’ve been wanting a new Canon RF lens which is out of stock almost everywhere. This lens is over $2,500 with tax. Amazon had 1 in stock. I ordered it because it was shipped and sold thru Amazon not some 3rd party. It came by UPS 2 days later. Low and behold they didn’t bother putting it in a box. Just shipped it in the original Canon box. The box is covered with about 8 or 9 big shipping stickers so you can’t really make out what the box is. One corner is slightly smashed or crushed. Nothing major.
I’m very tempted to return it. I don’t know if it has any damage. I assume it’s okay but seriously. Pack popsicle sticks and don’t pack an expensive lens. Who made this decision?
If I decide to sell it in the future someone would see all the shipping labels on the box and may not want it. I hate to return it because I may be waiting a while to find another.
The reason for all the shipping labels is I wasn’t home to sign for it. UPS decided to send it to the UPS store for me to pick up. They created more shipping labels with that stores address as well as additional instructions for the staff there.
My concern at this point is weather or not the lens could have been damaged.

Buying stuff on Amazon means it could actually come from hundreds of sellers/shippers. All set their own packing standards and some are clearly better than others. Don't assume what you buy comes from Amazon directly because the odds are that it does not.

I posted pictures. They are on page 6. It was an item that was sold and shipped by Amazon, not a 3rd party. The label shows it came directly from Amazon’s warehouse.

If it were me, unless you just have to have it now, I'd return it. It was possibly a returned item that they re-sold, meaning you may be paying a new price for a used item. No reputable dealer I know of ships without a secondary box. The lens though may be in perfect condition.
I don't understand. What would the possibility it is a returned item have to do with them not packing it in a shipping box..... new or otherwise.

I agree. I always want the original retail box as it adds value if I choose to later sell it. A retail box covered with labels is ridiculous.
Send it back Amazon has gotten to big for there pants.
Amazon shows the lens in stock, delivery Monday to my location in Delaware.
So, a return and replacement shouldn't cause much delay. At least in my experience Amazon ships the new one and gives a reasonable amount of time for the return before they would bill as an additional item.
Seeing the pictures of the original item I don't understand why this was even a topic for UHH. Thanks to Covid though, many of us have too much free time and pent up energy.
I got a phone call from the VA this afternoon scheduling my first shot next Wednesday at their soon to be opened new clinic.
