The stupidity of some.

Me thinks the reason many buyers of used camera equipment want the original factory boxes is another "garantee" that it is a US retail product and not grey market to avoid any service problems later. Of course it is the actual serial number on the product that matters but some people may feel a psychological comfort knowing at some manufacturers for some products use different graphics on their products made for different markets. I have noticed that myself, and have boxes like that for some of my Pentax equipment. Some boxes are obvious US boxes others may in fact be for Japnese or German buyers. I really dont care because most of the vintage equipment I have is long out of factory warranty and I would have to have it worked on at a private repair service anyway at my cost.

I know this subject has been beaten to death, like the box in question, but .... As mentioned, the factory box is not intended to protect the lens. It is not made for that. It is largely a display item. Watch boxes being bounced & slammed on & off conveyor belts being automatic sorted on Utube. I would say they go through the equivalence of being dropped from waist high many times. This is why fragile items (& lenses) are normally double boxed with padding. If you look for original camera or lens boxes on eBay, there are quite a few for sale because they do add to the resale value, and may be an indication of the care the item has received. I wouldn't risk a future problem showing up after the Amazon 30 day return window closes. Have them send a new one, or you could always borrow or rent what you need in the interim.

Improper packaging. I would return it because there is possibility of damage.

If you ever go to re-sell it having stickers all over original lens box would be a turn off for some buyers whereas buying a lens in its original box would be an attraction .

This is clearly irresponsible packaging by Amazon. I would return it. And, yes, having the original box does add some value at resale time.

Buyer: Sir, there is a crack on the front element of this lens.
Seller: But I still have the original box, and it's in pristine condition.

Buyer: Oh, well then that changes everything...I will give you your asking price.
Seller:

I get a lot of stuff from Amazon, as do my neighbors. I have never seen anything come from Amazon that wasn't in an Amazon box or an Amazon padded envelope. I'd love to see all the labels on the box in question, in particular the return address.

The photography issue for me is deciding to keep the lens or return it. Trying to decide if it somehow has damage or not.

Protect yourself by photographing all sides of the box before opening it. Record your careful opening of the box, the removal and inspection of the lens. Or you could call Adorama and ask them about it.

Lets see; the manufacturer of the camera/lens is in Japan, Korea, Vietnam, China or some other Asian country. As the product comes off the production line it is ensconced in the cardboard box that is specially designed for that product. From there it is moved (quite possibly some distance) to where it is packed into a huge shipping container. From there the container is moved by truck to the port of departure and loaded onto an ocean going vessel, destination: USA. From the port of Los Angeles (or elsewhere) the container is moved by truck to a distribution warehouse. At the warehouse the container is opened and the container full of photography equipment is unloaded buy hand onto pallets and the various products are moved by fork lift to the proper dock in the building. A semi is backed to the dock and the boxes are moved by hand into the trailer (it's called "finger printing"), note that the product is no longer on the pallet, the boxes are stacked on the floor. When the proper number of boxes are on the trailer the driver transports said photo equipment to it's destination. Could be several stops. At each stop the boxes are moved by hand. Note that the product is still in the original packing box. It's mistaken to say the pretty box the manufacturer provides is not suited for shipping. It is made precisely for shipping.

Document the condition, call Amazon and explain to who ever answers and if say no (which most likely they won't), but if they do ask very polietly if you could speak to a supervisor putting the final decision on them. I've had damaged in shipping and I call and they send out a will call lable for you to print out and call for a pickup or drop it off where you picked it up.

These items are never loosely loaded into shipping containers along with many other items. They are always boxed with other items.
The box it comes in is absolutely not intended for shipping. It is solely Intended for display and sale and lightly protecting the product during the sales process

I didn't say they were loosely loaded in the container. Common sense will tell you the container is packed solid. For more than one reason.
